Yilling Laozu rushed to get his last charges to the underworld, hoping to make it to the one event the gods allowed him to participate in. Being so busy allowed his power to grow exponentially, but he still wished the other Gods wouldn't openly scorn him. Every 5oo years three gods got sent to the human world to prove their core values were still the same. One didn't just get the job and keep it forever without proving themselves worthy of it. That is the very reason that gods have different overlapping domains.
Yilling Laozu himself was the God of death who dealt with the innocent; any innocent, like children or anyone victimized by others who had done no wrong. To a lesser extent, he was a god of compassionate justice and the god of ingenuity. Whenever he picked up the innocent souls he would mark the soul of those who harmed them and if they showed real regret while becoming a better person the mark would vanish. A marked soul was picked up by Yilling Laozu's death god friend for punishment before their trial. As a god of ingenuity, he was known to create new things inspiring the young towards the arts or new endeavors. Even less knew he had been assigned as the god of selfless love and protection before he asked to be a death god.
This time the gods undergoing their trial was the god of strategy, perseverance, and politics, Lianfang-zun. Yilling Laozu had personally met the god in his earlier years and didn't care for his constant fake smiles. Then there was the god of Honesty, compassion, and painting, Zewu-Jun. Lastly, the god Yilling Laozu was most excited about seeing was Hanguang-Jun. Hanguang-Jun was the main god of justice, Unconditional love, and War. He was Zewu-jun's younger brother.
In the 3,000 years since Yilling Laozu became a god, he had never met the man. He had only heard stories from his charges about the man's righteous character and dedication. Listening to the souls wax poetically about their time spent with Hanguang-Jun was his guilty pleasure. It had gotten so bad his friends worried he was a little obsessed with someone he had never met, although the idea of such a righteous person inspired him to be better himself.
He made sure to take all the secret paths he had created in the underworld to reach the exit without interruptions. Teleporting to the council hall without alerting anyone was a tricky issue. Thankfully he had years of practice getting in and out of places unnoticed. He managed to get a ballot from the table while no one was looking to sponsor Hanguang-Jun. Every god undergoing a trial needed to have at least one heavenly sponsor to return after just one lifetime. He diligently wrote what he hoped to see from a god of justice and turned it in without being seen.
He doubted his ballot would matter to a god such as Hanguang-Jun even if he wanted to help his idol in any way he could. Even though Ghost General and Yilling Laozu had been allowed to attend this event it didn't mean that the other gods made their time there pleasant. If Yilling Laozu hadn't wanted to see the man he looked up to like a hero to strive for he would not have attended at all. The few who noticed him looked on with disdain and gave him a wide berth as if he carried a plague.
Looking around for a good place to sit he noticed his older sworn brother the Headshaker waving at him to go sit by his side. Smiling he rushed over to his Da-ge whose face was hidden behind a beautifully decorated fan. The Headshaker was most known for being the god of the arts. He was an extremely beautiful yet frail-looking omega with dark hair and vibrant green eyes. It was less known that he was the god of strategic planning and vengeful justice. This was one of the reasons Yilling Laozu had become such good friends with him at first.
No one knew who it was, but if someone harassed the Ghost General they would find everything in their domains randomly in chaos (the Headshaker's doing). By that same token, Yilling Laozu intimidated those who would try to bully the Headshake. Then the Headshaker would secretly harass anyone who dared bother his friend, citing that Wei Wuxian was too selfless for his own good, not that he understood what that meant.
Everyone got to their seats and the screen lit up showing the lives of the candidates that had been sponsored. Immediately the room was in an uproar as Qiren the god of order, discipline, and knowledge yelled out to figure out who had dared to sponsor Hanguang-Jun. Wei Wuxian found this completely hypocritical in this domain of order and discipline since yelling was against the rules of the Celestial realm. Still, he didn't say anything but looked at his best friend looking for answers.
