Past
Valentina
Surreal.
That's the best definition I can give of what happened last night. Okay, it was just a touch of lips, but after all the events, in the last few weeks, it was a big step for me. Besides, nothing is anything with her. It gives me even more hope about the two of us.
Our marriage wasn't going well, and to be honest, as much as we were trying to keep it going, we knew the inevitable was going to happen. Yes, we probably would have broken up within few months or weeks. I felt it. I watched, unable to do much, how everything was falling apart around us. With great dread, I was watching the love of my life slip through my fingers.
Then, when I found myself more and more without solutions, with all that happened. She just woke up with no memory of anything, of our marriage, of the life we built together, of the love she once felt for me, not even our son. It was terrifying when it hit me. At the exact moment I realized what had happened, my first thought was: this time, I really lost her, truly, forever. I honestly believed it would be the end of us. As the days passed, my hope dwindled more and more. How could this happen to be reversed, if not even the doctors could understand the dimension of that event and its sequel? Each new appointment was like someone breaking my legs, preventing me from continuing to run for the two of us and trying to work it all out.
I remember the day before she woke up with no memory. We had decided to go out with our friends, to have a little fun. It should have been a fun night- and it really was, until the moment that pointless fight started. Their cries and accusations are still vivid in my memory.
- "You must think I'm some idiot, Valentina."
- "Luiza, please be rational, you are seeing things where there's nothing but your paranoia." I sigh, bringing my fingers to my temples to message them.
It wasn't long ago that we got back from the club where were, and my wife put on a tremendous show, worthy of an Oscar for the mess. We had to come back early, because she just freaked out in jealousy in front of our friends and started a fight with me for no real reason.
- "Be rational? More rational than I'm being, idiot?!" She emerges in the kitchen; her eyes shining almost murderously. Luiza always gets like that when she's really angry. I don't even bother to keep staring at her, I know it doesn't do much good to rebut what comes out of her mouth.
- "Do you think its acceptable for my wife to give conditions to other woman in front of me?"
Take a deep breath, Valentina. Don't get into this game, keep calm.
- "Luiza for god's sake! I didn't even realize I had someone hitting on me. I must have just been polite."
- "Polite? Were you being polite?"
Suddenly she glues to me, pressing my body against the counter I'm leaning back on. I look down, staring into her face. I'm still in my heels, and our size difference is pretty much at this point.
- "Is being polite the new way to analyze other woman and let them touch you?"
- "You are exaggerating."
I thought the things would be fun, but I was wrong. I try to get away from her and get out of there. I want to take off these clothes, take a shower, lie in bed and forget about tonight. Luiza stops me, using her body to keep me in place. Her face is red, and she exhales roughly.
- "Every time you stay late at work, does that mean you're being polite to someone else, too? That's it?"
- "Don't start. I'm serious with you."
