She's been staring at me for a few minutes, without saying a word. I think I shocked her in a surreal way. Duda continues to keep her eyes fixed on me, digesting what I had just said. Was it really that surprising?
- "Won't you say anything?"
She blinks a few times, waking up from her trance, and clears her throat, adjusting herself on the bed.
She seems restless, I know her well enough to know that. I'm nervous about what comes next.
- "Are you sure of what you just said?"
- "Yes." I respond, without hesitation. "It's been days since I've been imagining it, and it grows more and more inside me the desire to be a mother again. I don't know how to explain why, I just can't to control."
- "Lil, you know that a child brings a lot of responsibilities, right? Like, a lot. I know you have Leo, but it turns out he's already big, and responsible and his need and demands are totally different from what a newborn need."
- "I know that, Big. But there's something inside me burning for this."
- "You want to remember what it felt like to be pregnant. I really understand that, but stop and think about the moment you are living with your wife."
- "Duda, I know all this well. It's not just me deciding to get pregnant and her accepting it. I need to talk to her about it, but I'm sharing my wishes with you. It's just something that's inside me."
- "I understand, but are you really sure about this?"
I take a deep breath and look around me, seeing some baby photos of my son, feeling a tightness in my chest. I want this feeling back; I need it like its heroin or nicotine. I need to experience these things to feel more alive.
- "Very much."
- "Have you guys talked about this after everything happened? I mean, about having kids and everything. Now that you are getting better and better, it is normal for this topic to come up."
- "No. Valentina hasn't brought it up anymore, and I don't want to pressure her. I'm giving her time. But I see how she has been with you and how she is when Nayara's son is around."
- "Valentina has always been passionate about children. I told you before she wanted to have lots of children."
- "Yes, I know that. Before, I didn't really want this, but now it seems like everything inside me is begging for it."
- "I think this desire is common. You are increasingly adapted to your adult life, you have a son who you don't remember growing up, and the situation with Valentina is getting better and better. You two always wanted a big family. It's normal to want to have a new child, but know that it can be dangerous."
- "You are saying that because it triggers her, don't you?" Duda quickly nods her head.
- "Yes, I know. For that reason, I haven't said anything yet. I'll only speak when I feel it's time, and I want to. I also know that Valentina will never tell me "No" about this, but I don't want her to get hurt anymore to make me happy."
- "It's so good to see you caring and looking out for her good, you know? I was afraid that this time you would actually break up. Igor and I went through several difficult phases as well. I believe that every couple goes through it at some point, but the important thing is knowing how to face the barriers. Life is hard in itself, it's not worth getting stuck in something that doesn't make you happy anymore."
- "I'm more and more in love with her. It was so instantaneous that I only realized it when I could no longer deny myself. It is a dream to see her pregnant, you know? Even though I really want to get pregnant again, right now, I hope that in the future it will be her turn."
