The little girl was sobbing now. In full on absolute hysterics on the cold, dirty, unfamiliar floor, she kept repeating facts that were gibberish to anyone else but meant everything to her.
"My name's Y/N, and I've never seen a flower before. My mom and I love pinkie promises, when she had the energy she would tell me the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and she used to spray these small things of water and lavender scents on me. I've never met my dad, I don't like crying, and I'm seven. No. I'm six. Eight? How old am I? How old am I?"She asked, her mind losing itself. For hours she had been trapped in one room with a guard asking her things she mostly refused to answer. When that wasn't working they snatched her right up and put her in a different room with different people. They had these weird machines, and it hurt. Everything about this hurt, but she was just trying to hang on.
When she gave them what they wanted though, she seemed to be off because they didn't stop. Soon reality didn't mean anything to her.
"Y/N. My name is Y/N?"She asked. "And I have a best friend. A boy my age. He's hopeful. He likes believing in things. His name though. What's his name?"She asked.
Watching from the security camera, Ava and Janson exchanged a look.
"This boy, do you think that we have him?"She asked, looking back at the little girl sobbing so hard she looked ready to throw up. While there was a part of Ava that felt bad for this kid, she knew that this girl was an immune. If she got bit she would get a nasty wound, but she wouldn't die from it. Ava, and thousands of others, would.
"I'm sure we do,"He nodded.
"Then, we need to find him,"She said firmly.
"What are we gonna do?"
"Whatever we can to finally get the perfect test subject. We have that though so we need her to stay that way forever."
Your P.O.V
Walking around the halls during break, I was checking the best ways out of here. Making an internal map, I spoke aloud where the place was before moving on. My hope is that it will stick better.
"Section 5.3. I've been here already,"I repeated, deciding I had enough information for now. Turning around, I was headed back to my room. It's best not to piss off the guards right before I leave.
"Thomas doesn't know anything,"I heard a male voice speak, muffled through the metal voice. Recognizing it as Janson, I pressed my ear to it in hopes of finding something useful.
"He just seems suspicious of us,"Someone argued.
"He's just a bit off. Everyone feels like that here at first. They don't actually think we're doing anything bad,"He debated. That definitely didn't make any sense. They get so many kids that they're running out of dorms, and not a single one would think there was more to this place? Is he in denial, blind, or just an idiot? Maybe he's all of them. That wouldn't be shocking.
"He's a past worker. What if he knows something?"
"He doesn't. All of their memories are wiped. Even Y/N's have been erased time and time again, and she doesn't know. We just did it last month, remember?"
I froze as I heard my name. What did he mean? What did I do last month? How much of me was missing?
"That's easy though. She's been through so much that her mind's practically blocked it out,"He added.
"You mean we put her through too much."
"We put her through enough to make what we need. She's got no option but to be loyal. Thomas betrayed us. He got the same treatment, and he definitely won't do it again."
Thomas? If he really betrayed them once then it is possible he would do it again. There just has to be someone who knows more about him.
And I think there is. If Aris is in that cafeteria then he could know exactly who that is. I just need to talk to him.
Aris's P.O.V
I wanted to sleep, but I couldn't even bring myself to shut my eyes. Knowing what this place was killed me on the inside. I didn't even have the luxury of believing I had been safe for a little bit. Now that it was confirmed taking it in was harder to stomach than I thought. Especially seeing her. Seeing what they had done to Rachel had me both seething that anyone could do this and ashamed that I didn't know how to save her.
As I continued staring at absolutely nothing the door suddenly opened. On edge, I immediately sat up and subtly moved as far away from it as possible.
"Aris Jones. Do we have an Aris in here?"a familiar voice asked. What the hell was she doing here? What was so important it couldn't wait until later?
Pretending I didn't know her, I stood up and followed her. The second she shut the door she dragged me to some random room across the hall and locked the door. As she turned on the light I realized that it was a closet. Why does this place have so many, and why is she always shoving me in them?
"Do you know someone here named Thomas?"She got straight to the point.
"I know who he is. I don't know anyone, but I know of them,"I explained.
"He was a past worker here but betrayed them. If he betrayed them once-"
"Then, he might want to do it again,"I realized.
"Exactly. As great as it would be to just walk out, this place has too many guards. If we have someone on our side with more strength or just more people in general we have a better chance."
"He sits with this group called the Gladers. Maybe they'd help if Thomas convinced them to."
"Exactly. We just need a way to speak to him without anyone seeing on account that people think we're strange,"She pointed out. Is she going to be this painfully blunt forever?
It's better than lying though. No matter how odd it may make talking to her.
"It isn't like anyone would listen in,"I pointed out.
"They would. People would want to know what we had to say to them. Some people think that you're a freak now too, because you talk to me so it would catch their attention."
"Gee thanks. How kind to tell me,"I deadpanned.
"Really? I thought it was more of just honest."
Right. I forgot about the no sarcasm rule around her.
"I wasn't being serious. I'll teach you about it when we escape,"I promised.
"You've got your mind made up pretty easily,"She stated.
"What do you mean?"
"You said when. Not if,"She pointed out.
"Yeah. I guess I just decided this will work. We're getting out of here, and that's that,"I shrugged.
"Your optimism is nice, but be cautious. Too much of it is bad, Because you'll just assume things will go your way,"She warned.
"Is it so bad to have the mindset you can get through something though?"
"I think it's unrealistic, but you do you. Now you need to go before anyone suspects something,"She directed, peeking her head out the door. When she said it was all clear I blindly took her word for it. I do that a lot, and I think I'm going to have to keep it up for a while.
