18) Inconveniences

Aris had been holding on to the fact that he was going to see Y/N again at lunch. That would make up for Maverick taking her bed. He knew it would still sting that she didn't remember him, but he had to accept the pain if he wanted to still have her presence. For some reason, that was a package deal.

Unfortunately for both of them, she was nowhere to be found when he sat in his usual spot.

“She doesn't need anesthesia. She can't feel it,”Janson argued. Y/N just sat there in paper white scrubs as she watched them go back and forth about her.

“She still has the ability to move. What if there's some kind of sudden noise and she turns her head without thinking? That's an early grave waiting to happen.”

“She knows better than to do so.”

“We’re not fixing a broken ankle, Janson. We're putting something in her throat,”Ava said firmly.

“It’s a small incision.”

“I don't care. I call the shots here. You need to remember your place.”

Janson’s face flushed as he narrowed his eyes at her. His stomach burned at the humiliation, the reminder that as long as she's alive he’ll always stand in the shadows. For a moment, his hands clasped around the area he would keep his gun on his belt.

Ava noticed this of course. She was Chancellor because despite everything, she was intelligent. Both with people and with science. Janson could only find his way around the second one. His inflated ego made it difficult to treat anyone else with true and actual kindness.

“We have the resources. It doesn't matter whether or not you think she's worthy of them. End of discussion.”

Aris's P.O.V

I swear to every sense of sanity I have, if this girl does one more dangerous thing I am going to scream. Looking after her might be a bit harder than I thought.

I don't have a choice though. I promised, and I wouldn't just go back on my word just because it won't be easy. No matter what, I was going to help her out.

Because she does have a heart. She said she helped me with my scrapes because she was ‘fixing her mistake’. What mistake did she make when she almost died for me? None.

And I can see it in her eyes. Eyes are the window to the soul. Whatever mind she's trapped in, she wants to get out. She just needs someone to help, and if I’m the person she thinks could do it then I will.

Even if she is leaving me one more decision from pulling my hair out.

Your P.O.V

With everyone up, we were all sat in a circle with plenty of space between people. Aris and Thomas had ended up on the left and right side of me, while I sat on the slant that was most likely how we got down here in the first place. I wouldn’t know. I was unconscious.

“So you're our guide though this place?”Thomas clarified.

“I know more information than you all do so that would make sense. I don’t know every last detail about it of course, but I’m aware of enough to get us to Right Arm,”I answered.

“How do we know Right Arm isn't just another WCKD?”

“Because WCKD hates them. They want everyone there dead,”I said simply.

“Oh, that's fantastic,”Maverick grumbled under his breath.

“Seeing as WCKD wants us dead, yes it is.”

Maverick rolled his eyes, his distaste for anyone questioning him only showing up more and more. I thought that may have calmed down since his nose is still pretty bruised, but I guess I was wrong.

“So what are we doing then? What's the plan?”Newt asked.

“We have to find Right Arm in the mountains. If we do, we’ll live the rest of our lives with them.”

“If?”Thomas repeated.

“Yes. If.”

“Why if? Don't ya’ know what you're doin’?”

“There's a lot of dangerous things here. Cranks, the weather, how long the walk will be, and any other unexpected elements,”I listed.

“Why even leave at that point?”

“You can stay if that's what you want.”

“I was just askin’. You ain't gotta get all sarcastic on me.”

“She’s not being sarcastic,”Aris promised before I could.

“She sure sounds like it.”

“But she’s not.”

I understand better why he got a tray slammed into his face. He already seemed unbearable to be around, but observing him didn’t even begin to compare to him being close. I can’t help but think that this may have been easier if we just left him sleeping and escaped without him. It’d be cruel but probably preferable for everyone.

“We have to get walking if we want to be there in any kind of timely manner,”I said as I stood up.

“It would be nice not to be stuck here the rest of our bloody lives,”Newt nodded, adjusting the collar of his jacket as he did the same, pulling it off of his neck. I made a mental note of that. I’ve heard that clothes can be uncomfortable, but I didn't know that could include outfits that are fine on their own if they don't sit in a particular way.

Sometimes I’m glad the small inconveniences mean nothing to me. You can't get hurt if you can't feel pain. You can't overreact because of emotion or freeze because of fear.

You can underreact though. You can not show enough emotion, and as a result be labeled heartless. No matter what you're willing to do for others, if you don't do it from the heart it's seen as worthless. You can overthink too, analyzing every small piece of the world to try and fit in with it.

I won't though. Not unless I learn to get rid of my practicability. Not unless I rid myself of this curse that does more for me than I care to admit. Because I can't really care for anything or anyone.

This is who I am. This is who I’ve been for as long as I can remember. Giving up a part of me that's so crucial to my personality, or lack of, would lead to far more complex questions about my identity than I think I can admit right now.

This has been hell though. True and utter hell. And if I have to go through a different kind for a bit so I’m not a freak, so be it.
