“They’ve grown attached pretty quick,”Aris’s mother remarked, watching as her son stayed at the kitchen table with this seemingly random girl he had just met, drawing photos with her as the two toddlers whispered to each other.
“That's good though. Immunes have to stick together, especially right now,”Y/N’s mom nodded.
“I know. I just wish it was different, you know?”She sighed, shaking her head as she looked away from the two kids.
“I do, but it isn't.”
“And that means that one day the other will be the only thing they have,”She whispered.
“It depends on how the future goes, on how far,”She paused, checking to make sure the children were still distracted before lowering her voice, “WCKD is willing to go.“
Both mothers shuddered at the name before returning their gaze to Y/N and Aris who were lost in their own world that only a child could have. Their sudden closeness, while odd, was important.
It would be exactly what the two needed to make it through the next day.
Even if they’ll never remember this day, maybe something about it will stick into their subconscious, letting them know that this “stranger” is the most trustworthy person that's ever lived.
Your P.O.V
Together, we all made our way back to Thomas’s room. As usual, I stayed in the lead, keeping a lookout before finally buzzing open his door and slamming it wide open.
“Who the hell keeps turning on them lights?”a boy, who I think I recognized as Maverick, groaned as it flooded the room. Paying it no mind, the other two followed in, with one of them actually flicking on the lights while the other shut the door.
“Now I know I’m not dreaming,”Minho mumbled as he sat up.
“Come on. Everybody get up, and let’s go,”I ordered, tossing Aris the extra key.
“Go where? What are you on about?”the blonde boy asked, getting out of bed.
“We’re leaving. Thomas, tie the door,”I ordered. Nodding his head, he quickly ripped the sheets from a bed and made a knot as I crawled under to get the screws off.
“Leaving? Why would we be leaving? We’ve talked about this, Tommy. We don't need to-”
“We do. We can't stay here any longer. All along, this place was off. It was off, and-”
“Thomas, you aren't being bloody helpful right now. Just calm down, and-”
“It's WCKD,”He finally got out, helping Aris grab a mattress as I crawled back out from under the bed with the cover off. As I did, I saw that practically everybody had frozen in their spots, eyes wide in disbelief.
“WCKD? How would-”
“You never escaped the Maze. You were simply taken to one of the final steps before harvesting. It was all a part of the plan. Gally, Chuck, escaping it, the Griever's, all of it was planted by the people in here,”I clarified.
“What the hell is guard girl doing here?”
“Helping get you out of here. It's the only way you’ll get to live.”
“Get to live? What are you-”
“You're wasting time with these questions. Come on. We have to get moving before Janson comes to check in.”
“Check in? What-”
“Do you want to open your eyes tomorrow or not?”Aris cut him off.
“I mean yes, but-”
“Then, follow our lead,”He ordered.
As swiftly as possible I ducked back under the bed and squeezed through the vent underneath it. Without stopping to look back, I turned a corner as I stayed on my hands and knees, crawling to the side.
