HAEJIN READ THE permission slip out loud, before she placed the paper down on the small table next to the hospital bed her dad was lying on.
"So..." she dragged it out. "Can I go?"
Her dad bit the inside of his cheek. "I just don't know whether I have enough money for this. I have a lot of expenses at the moment-"
"Mom called and said she'll pay for it" Haejin cut him off, fiddling with her fingers. "I don't want to cause you any extra stress."
"The stress will always be there," he said, with a faint smile. "And when everything goes back to normal, I'll have to deal with it again."
Haejin scoffed. "Why can't you just ask Mom-" It was his turn to cut her off. "I don't like to repeat myself, Haejin. And I know both of us do not want a repetition of what happened last time we had this discussion."
Haejin bit her bottom lip, before nodding.
"The twenty third is two days away, right?" He asked, and she nodded again. "Let your mom pay, you can go. I guess I won't see you for another couple of days then?" He smiled at her, a hand cupping her cheek as frail fingers caressed it softly.
"Yeah," she said quietly. "Get better soon, Dad" she held his free hand in hers. "We'll sort out your other issue when I get back, ok? I can't bear to see this happen to you any longer."
Her voice was firm and determined.
"I'll get going now," she said. "It's almost six, and I have work tomorrow." He smiled at her. "Shut the curtains as you go, will you?"
