ON THE FLIGHT back to Sangang, Haejin had to sit next to Seorin. It wasn't that she hated her. She hadn't had any bad experiences with her personally.
Haejin's opinion of Seorin was formed by everyone else's opinion. All of those thoughts feeding together painted Seorin as a tyrant, a hater and an over-achiever.
But it seemed that Seorin did have a problem with Haejin.
As the two sat down beside each other, the awkwardness was clear. No matter how many times Haejin attempted to spark up a conversation between the two (in vain hope to ease the growing feelings of enmity), Seorin would give blunt replies.
"How did it feel winning first place?"
"Good."
"Was it fun to work with Sangjin?"
"Yes."
"What's your favourite school subject?"
"All of them."
It wasn't that Seorin was mean, no. Her answers didn't even have the slightest tone of hostility. It was more like she was scared.
It was like she was hiding something.
She couldn't look Haejin in the eye. Even if she did, she seemed tense. Haejin noticed how tense she looked the entire flight.
Eyes looking through pitch black sky out the window, fingers tapping a slow beat against her thigh. Seorin seemed, well, disconnected. Her hands shook as she played around with her food, only managing to swallow a few bites.
But when the flight landed and Seorin had joined her own friends once again, she seemed completely fine. Chirpy, sweet, effortlessly beautiful. She seemed to be herself.
There was so explanation for what had caused her to be so tense around Haejin. It was like she was on the edge. On the edge of being ratted out.
Haejin went straight home and unpacked. She didn't realised how much she missed her shower, her bathroom, her room, her house, the Sangang air, everything. She changed out of her plane attire into a comfortable pair of jeans, and added on a knitted black sweater.
