❄️
The desert was as hot as usual.
The scorching sun, the heated sand, and the sound of the gusting winds poured into your ears as you laid down at an oasis, trying to cool off.
Ever since you returned to Sumeru, your fevers had been going on and off. It was crazy how much your body adapted to the sheer temperatures of the Fortress, especially after being locked away in that ice box.
You sighed, trying to cool off before you would return to your troupe. You had been quite busy as of late— and by busy, you were constantly fighting off enemies and taking on various jobs of your interest.
You kicked your leg over the other, squinting up at the blue sky.
"..."
That soft color...
"...Wr—"
"Got a minute?"
Your thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. You turned your head over to look at the girl smiling down at you.
"Damn, your stealth gets better and better every day, Dehya."
The girl laughed and placed her hands on her hips. "I was planning on startling you, but you looked too out of it to even notice me anyways."
"Nah, I'm alright." You responded.
"You sure?"
Dehya sat next to you, loosening her ponytail that sat upon her head. She propped her arm over her leg, staring down at the crystal clear water in front of you.
"Do I not sound sure?" You asked.
"Not at all." She said. "The sun doesn't set for a few more hours, yet here you are, doing nothing. That's not like you."
You smirked and closed your eyes. "You read me like a book."
She laughed before speaking once again. "...You know, ever since you came back, nothing has changed."
You looked back at her, raising a brow. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"Everything remained the same after you left, and everything remained the same after you came back."
"...Are you saying I'm not needed?" You asked.
"Not at all." The wind caused her hair to blow past her shoulders, hiding her face. "Of course everyone missed you, including me. But we didn't struggle without you."
"..." You remained silent, getting a slight grasp on where she was heading with this conversation.
"You got a name for yourself here. But do you have a name for yourself over there?"
Her question caused you to freeze.
A name... for myself in Fontaine?
"I assume you haven't heard from him."
You sighed, hoisting yourself up. "That doesn't matter. What matters is that I'm where I belong."
"Hm..." Dehya stole a glance at you before returning her attention back to the water. "...They say a person stuck between two worlds is like a battle between your mind and your heart."
"Dehya." You said in a warning tone. "I know what you're trying to do, and it's not going to work."
She giggled. "Then just answer me this: Where does your heart belong?"
You scoffed. "Here, obviously."
"Wrong."
You squinted at her. "How do you know?"
"Physically, you belong to the desert. But mentally... you belong in Fontaine."
"That doesn't make sense." You said. "I belong here, both mentally or whatever you said."
"Look, Y/N..." Dehya turned her head to face you. "...I know you're scared."
You looked away from her, trying to avoid eye contact.
"But you can't be scared forever. It's been a few months since you've last been to Fontaine. And you can't keep using the same excuse to not go back."
The truth hit you like a solid brick. It made your stomach twist and turn in a way you didn't like.
But she was right.
You had been avoiding your fears for far too long now. Ever since your mother passed, the fear of loneliness had settled into your body. Because you were truly alone...
Until Wriothesley came along.
"...What do I even say to him..." You started, looking down at the ring on your finger.
"Well, for starters, you could write to him..." Dehya smiled. "Considering that you are clearly still in love with him."
"...What if he moved on...?" You glanced back up at the sky, finishing your previous thoughts.
"The guy who literally killed for you? Yeah, I doubt that." Dehya joked. "After you told me everything that had happened, I would bet some mora he's probably planning something just to get you back."
You let out a small laugh. "He's fucking crazy."
"Which you oddly admire." She said. "Which kinda makes you crazy."
You smiled. "I've met death's door so many times, but when I was in the Fortress, I was sure that I wasn't going to come out..."
"...Tell me."
"Hm?"
"Why him?"
A puzzled look came about your face. "...What?"
Dehya's eyes met with the color of the sun, making them glow. "Of all the people on Teyvat... why him?"
"..." You thought about her question for a moment. You didn't want to give her just some bullshit reason, like 'Because I love him' or 'Because he's done so much for me', but it felt like the answer to that question could not be found inside of your head, no matter how much you thought about it.
Your gaze returned back to the sky. There it was again, that soft blue color that was full of a certain tranquility.
But even the skies can turn cold and dark, coveting the light hidden within it.
Your lips found a soft smile as another small gust of wind blew over your skin.
Your head may not know the answer...
But something else does.
"...What does Y/N's heart want?"
"...Because he saved me."
