❄️
Living in Fontaine for the past year has certainly been... new. The traditions, holidays, and the never-ending cycle of bipolar weather had grown on you in a positive way, but there were times when you questioned some rather interesting celebrations.
After your wedding, Wriothesley bought out the room you shared a passionate moment in for ownership. You felt a twinge of guilt for draining his pockets after everything that had happened, but he insisted that you should live comfortably above the surface. Even so, you weren't so fond of the idea of living off his wallet. So, after a lot of time researching and studying, you opened your own flower boutique.
Just like your mother's.
It was surprisingly going well. You had no idea that people would love what you'd produce, despite being a beginner. But the more you worked, the more popular your shop became, and the more you felt like you had reached true happiness.
However, you hadn't been physically feeling the best. Once you had admitted your unusual fatigue to Wriothesley, he immediately had Sigewinne check up on you. But after countless examinations and some minor procedures, nothing could be found other than the usual symptoms of a common cold.
It wasn't until one specific procedure when Sigewinne had found the cause for your exhaustion.
"I found some traces of cardiac glycosides in your lungs." Sigewinne said, a small frown on her face as she stood beside you. "I noticed that your breathing pattern was irregular through my stethoscope from the last examination. The procedure from three days ago tested positive for those chemicals."
"Cardiac glycosides," You repeated, a sense of dread washing over you. "You're thinking it has something to do with my plants."
Sigewinne nodded, letting out a small sigh. "In order to recover properly, you need to spend a lot of time away from plants, chemicals, and anything that's not fresh air. But I'll have to monitor your situation closely..."
"Why is that?" Wriothesley asked, his brows furrowed. "If fresh air is all she needs, I can take care of that."
"It's... not that simple." She replied, "When human beings inhale toxins for extended periods of time, it begins to decay their lungs. And her symptoms started showing weeks ago--she could have very well have been breathing in those toxins for a long period of time."
"Decaying?!" Wriothesley spat, his eyes widening at her words. "What the hell does that mean?!"
"Wriothesley..." You muttered, "Stop shouting. Please."
His eyes quickly flashed over to you, noticing how you had begun to rub your temple. "Sorry, sorry..." He sighed, wrapping his arm around your waist. "But still. You honestly think her lungs are decaying?"
"It's only a possibility." Sigewinne said, "Which is why I said I'll have to monitor her situation closely. Depending on if her symptoms worsen or better themselves, I can provide a more proper diagnosis."
"Before that, do you have any clue on what you were inhaling?" Wriothesley questioned, looking down at you.
You sighed, leaning back a bit. "The only thing I can think of is the rosebay I have kept in the back of the shop. It's good for some skin care products I have with one of my business partners..."
Wriothesley's features hardened, despite him not knowing the negative effects of the flower you mentioned. "I'll get rid of that and have everything temporarily closed. You can't go back there for a while, understood?"
"I'll also have some medicine prepared for you. It should clear your air pipes and help with your fatigue." Sigewinne added, "The less air you intake results in lower energy. So you have to make sure that you stay well rested and avoid moving around so much."
"That too." Wriothesley said, "I told you that you should've taken a break months ago..."
You groaned, rolling your eyes at the both of them. "I know, I know. Both of you drive me up the wall about staying off my feet..."
"If we don't tell you, you won't listen." Wriothesley retorted, "You're too stubborn for your own good, princess."
"I thought we agreed that nickname was retired." You said, "Don't go back on your word."
"Force of habit." He chuckled, resting his head on top of yours. "You'll always be a princess in my eyes..."
You rolled your eyes again, but you couldn't deny the small flutter in your chest at his words. Despite being together for this long, he still managed to make you feel like you were falling in love all over again.
But that feeling didn't last long as the weight of the situation began to dawn on you. Your gaze fell down to your lap, your mind immediately going to the worst-case scenario. At that moment, you didn't care about your own life.
You were far too concerned about the risks...
"...But I'll happily give that name to my daughter."
...for your unborn baby.
