"How could I be so stupid!" Hermione placed the book on the table with a loud thud, accidentally hitting Harry's finger. "I checked this out weeks ago for a bit of light reading."

"This is light?" Ron questioned, looking at Hermione with slightly widened eyes.

"Of course! Here it is!" Hermione pointed at a section. "Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone!"

Harry and Ron glance at each other, confused before they turned to look at Harper and Hermione.

"The what?" Harry and Ron asked.

"The Sorcerer's Stone is a legendary substance with astonishing powers. It will transform any metal into pure gold and produces the Elixir of Life, Which will make the drinker immortal." Harper reads to them from the book as Ron turns his head to look at him.

"Immortal." Ron said to himself as Harper nods.

"It means you'll never die." Hermione explained.

"I know what it means--"

"The only stone currently in existence belongs to Mr Nicolas Flamel." Harper started reading again before they could get into an argument. "The noted alchemist, who last year celebrated his six hundred and sixty-fifth birthday." He looked up after he finished reading. "That's what Fluffy's guarding on the Third Floor. That's what's under the trapdoor. The Sorcerer's Stone!"

"So Flamel knows someone's after the Stone... gives it to Dumbledore to keep safe at Hogwarts... not realizing that the one who's after it..." Harry trailed off, looking up at the others.

"Teaches at Hogwarts." Hermione said.

"So Snape, or Quirrell, wants piles of gold and to live forever. Who wouldn't?" Ron said, adding the latter name just to see Harper smile. And it works.

Hermione closes the book, troubled by something.

"What is it, Hermione?" Harry asked, wondering what's troubling her.

"I don't want to scare you, Harry. It's just... if all Snape wants is the Sorcerer's Stone... why did he try to kill you that day on the Quidditch pitch?" Hermione said.

Harry thinks about it, but doesn't have an answer.

The quartet walked towards Hagrid's hut. Harry knocked on Hagrid's door. The door rattles, opens a crack, and Hagrid peers out.

"Oh. Hullo. Er... not ter be rude, but I'm not really fit ter entertain right about--"

"We know about the Sorcerer's Stone." Harry cuts Hagrid off before he could say more.

Hagrid lets the quartet in and Harper takes a seat beside Fang, Fang placing his head on Harper's lap gaining a jealous look from Ron which Harper doesn't catch as he is petting Fang.

"Snape! Blimey, yer not still on abou' him, are yeh?" Hagrid asked, adding wood to an already roaring fire.

"Hagrid, we know he's after the Stone. We just don't know... why." Harry questioned.

"Harry, Snape was one o' the teachers in on protectin' the Stone. He's not abou' ter steal it." Hagrid said.

"What?" Harry questioned.

"Yeh heard me: Snape was one o' the teachers in on protectin' the Stone. Now, as I said, I'm a bit preoccupied at the moment--"

"Wait a minute. One of the teachers?" Harry asked.

"Of course! There are other things defending the Stone, aren't there? Spells, enchantments..." Hermione said.

"That's right. Bloody waste o' time if yeh ask me. T'ain't no one goin' ter get past Fluffy. Not a soul knows how 'cept me an' Dumbledore--" Hagrid was cut off by a clicking sound from the kettle, then a curious scraping.

Harper turned his head and saw a huge black egg, intrigued by the egg as he looks at Hagrid.

"Hagrid... exactly what is that?" Harry asked.

"Ah. Well. That's... er..." Hagrid hesitate.

"I know what that is!" Ron exclaimed, before looking up at Hagrid. "But Hagrid. How did you ever get one?"

"Won it. Off a stranger in the village. Think he was glad ter be rid of it, ter be honest. Blimey..." Hagrid explained.

The scraping is louder now. Quickly, Hagrid takes the egg from the kettle and sets it on a table. Fissures spread like veins over its surface, then it explodes, shell flying like shrapnel. The quartet cover themselves so they won't be hit with the shells.

"Is that a dragon?" Hermione asked, noticing Harper's eyes lighting up at the mention of the dragon.

"That's not just a dragon! That's a Norwegian Ridgeback! My brother Charlie works with these in Romania." Ron said, watching as Harper got up from the floor and moved closer to Hagrid to look at the dragon.

"Isn't he beautiful!" Hagrid said, letting Harper look at the dragon with a smile on his face. "Bless 'im, look, he knows 'is Mummy!" He said, taking the dragon into his hand and tickling his tummy. "Hullo, Norbert."

"Norbert?" Harry questioned, watching Harper take Norbert into his arms, cradling the dragon like a baby and the dragon stretched its body, making himself comfortable in Harper's arms.

"Well, he's got ter have a name." Hagrid said, looking at Harper and Norbert with a happy smile.

Norbert opens his eyes, looking up at Hagrid from Harper's arm and sneezes, spewing forth a shower of sparks, which sends Fang whimpering and kindles a brief blaze in Hagrid's beard.

"Needs ter be trained up a bit, o' course." Hagrid said, letting out a small chuckle before stopping cold when he sees a figure at the window. "Hey, you there!"

Harper turns his head, catching the sight of Draco looking into the hut.

"Malfoy!" Harry exclaimed, going to the door and seeing him racing across the grounds, disappearing in the night.

Harper gave Norbert back to Hagrid, petting his head. "Goodbye, Norbert." He mutters, smiling when Norbert lets out a small yawn.
