Students gather around Hagrid as Harry, Ron, Harper and Hermione arrive. Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle are standing with the other Slytherins.
"C'mon now, get a move on! Got a real treat for yeh. Great lesson comin' up. Follow me." Hagrid said, leading them towards a small paddock just the side of the Forbidden Forest. In the paddock, a freestanding iron rack hangs with dead ferrets, buzzing with flies. Nearby is a pumpkin patch.
"Gather 'round. Find herself a spot. That's it. Now, firs' thing yeh'll want ter do is open her books--"
"And exactly how do we do that?" Draco sneered.
"You stroke its spine." Harper answered softly, stroking the book's spine and it shivers.
Hagrid nodded and told everyone to do what Harper did, turning and disappearing into the trees.
Draco shakes his head, speaks loudly to Crabbe and Goyle. "God, this place is going to the dogs. Wait until my father hears Dumbledore's got this oaf teaching classes."
"Listen, you stupid prat--" Harper said, stopped by Hermione who held onto his arm.
Eyes widening in fear, Draco steps back and points behind the quartet. "Potter, there's a Dementor behind you."
Harry jumps, turning in fear, and finds nothing. Instantly, the Slytherins make an ooh sound, then break up laughing. Harry reddens, embarrassed then a strange creature emerges from the trees.
It has the torso, hind legs, and tail of a horse, but the front legs, wings and head of a giant eagle. The students step back in fear, then Hagrid appears, shooing the creature on.
"Gee up, there!" Hagrid said, grinning. "Beau'iful, isn't he?"
There seems no consensus on this, but the students stare in wary wonder nonetheless. As Hagrid coaxes the beast to the center of the paddock, Ron stares uneasily.
"Hagrid. Exactly what is that?" Ron asked, looking at Harper who looks mesmerized by the beast. Oh, no. That's not good.
"A Hippogriff, o' course. Now, firs' thing yeh gotta know is they're proud. Easily offended, Hippogriffs are. Don't never insult one, 'cause it migh' be the las' thing yeh do. Right then-- who wants ter come an' say hello?" Hagrid said.
The entire class steps back, leaving Harry and Harper in front. Harry noticed this and stepped back. Harper looked over his shoulder, looking at the trio with playful eyes. "Traitor." He mouthed, making the trio smile.
"Good man, Harper!" Hagrid exclaimed.
Harper nervously approached Hagrid, looking up at Hagrid. Nervous, but excited feeling inside his chest.
"That's it. Easy now... stop!" Hagrid stopped Harper from walking. "This here's Buckbeak, Harper. Yeh want ter let 'im make the firs' move. It's polite, see? Jus' take step forward, give 'im a bow, and if Buckbeak bows back, yeh're allowed ter touch him. Ready?"
Harper nods, stepping forward and bows. Buckbeak's head cocks, eagle eyes studying Harper for a few seconds before Buckbeak ducks his beak.
Hagrid sighs, relieved. "Well done, Harper! Go on. Give 'im a pat."
Harper reaches out, laying his hand on Buckbeak's fierce beak. The class claps, even Draco has a small smile on his face as Harper smiles at Buckbeak.
"Look at that! I reckon he migh' let yeh ride 'im!" Hagrid said.
Harper snapped his head to Hagrid, his eyes lighting up. "Really?"
Hagrid nods, a bright smile on his face. "We'll jus' set yeh behind the wing joint. Mind yeh don' pull any feathers out. He won't like that." He said, lifting Harper high, drops him into Buckbeak's back, and before Harper's settled, slaps Buckbeak's hindquarters. "Off yeh go!"
As Buckbeak gallops forward, Harper slides scarily back, giant wings unfold, huge and powerful, and they soar into the air. Rising higher. And higher. And higher.
Gradually, Harper loosens his hold on Buckbeak's neck. Losing himself in the joy of flying. Smiling at the sight of his and Buckbeak's shadow racing across the grass below. Circling over the Whomping Willow, past Hogwarts castle, and then swooping, with heart-stopping speed, over the Black Lake, Buckbeak's talons tickling the smooth glass of the water, summoning the Giant Squid to the surface briefly.
Hagrid whistles then, and Buckbeak wheels, beating his way back to the paddock, galloping to a halt. As Harper slides off, the class cheers. Harry, Ron and Hermione have a wide smile on their face at the sight of Harper's bright smile on his face.
"Good work, Harper!" Hagrid exclaimed, before talking under his breath. "How'm I doin' me firs' day?"
"Brilliant, Professor." Harper said, both grinning, when Draco pushes past them roughly, striding towards Buckbeak.
"Give me a go at that thing. If Granger can do it, it must be easy. You're not dangerous at all, are you, you great ugly brute--"
"Malfoy! No!"
In a flash, Buckbeak's steely talons slash down. Draco freezes, looking down at the blood blossoming on his robes and shrieks.
Instantly, Harper dashes forward. Buckbeak whips around, raises its talons and-- seeing Harper-- lowers them. Ducks its beak. Harper turned and looked at Draco with furrowed eyebrows as he stood beside Buckbeak.
"It's killed me! It's killed me!" Draco said dramatically.
"Calm yourself! Yer fine... jus' a scratch..." Hagrid said, looking at the deep gash glistening on Draco's limp arm.
"Hagrid. He's got to be taken to a hospital. I'll go with you, if you like--" Hermione said but was cut off by Hagrid.
"No. I'm the teacher. You all... you all just... Class dismissed!" Hagrid swoops up Malfoy, flops him over his shoulder, and lumbers towards the castle.
Harper looked towards his friend, looking up at Buckbeak and bowing his head before walking towards his friends with a smile on his face. "Ninny that was amazing." He said, letting out a hearty laugh.
Hermione shakes her head, but there's a smile on her face. "You're on another level Hare."
