The whole class looks around as a Gryffindor student comes staggering in, late to the class.
"Sorry, Professor..." The student said, looking down with a guilty expression.
Professor Umbridge smiles, toad-like, at the student. "Hmm, let's see, five points from Gryffindor for coming in late."
The student frowns, but sits down between Harper and Eloise.
"Now, as I was saying before Mr. Harred interrupted, your Defense Against the Dark Arts education has been rather fragment and disjointed in your past classes, hasn't it?" Professor Umbridge said as Harper frowns.
Lucius was a good teacher last year, what is she talking about? He once more questioned why Dumbledore didn't just keep Lucius as the Dark Arts professor. It's not like he was a bad teacher like every other person, maybe except Lupin. But then he remembers the curse on the Defense Against the Dark Arts position the Dark Lord has placed on it.
"Know now that this is about to be rectified." Professor Umbridge said, breaking Harper out of his thought. "I will be following a pre-approved Ministry-prepared, theory-centered Defense lesson plan." She waves her wand at the blackboard and words are written on it. "Copy this down."
Everyone opens their books and begins copying, except Hermione, who sits with her book unopened, her hand in the air.
Professor Umbridge ignores her.
However, within the next few seconds, nearly the whole class is watching Hermione.
Professor Umbridge sighs. "Yes?"
"I wanted to know something about your course aims." Hermione said.
"Well, they should be perfectly self-evident." Professor Umbridge said.
"Well, I don't think they are. They say nothing about actually doing spells." Hermione said.
Professor Umbridge let out a laughs. "I can imagine no circumstance in my class where you would need to use spells, my dear!"
"But surely the whole point of Defense Against the Dark Arts is practical application?" Hermione questioned.
"Miss Granger, this class has been approved by Ministry experts. Are you a Ministry Expert?" Professor Umbridge asked.
"No, but--"
"Then you have no business challenging those who are. We will be learning about spells in a safe, risk-free environment--"
"But we've got O.W.L.s coming up! You expect us to do the spells with no practice?" Hermione asked.
"What good's theory in the real world?" Harry asked.
"This is school, not the real world, Mr. Potter. There is nothing out there waiting to get you." Umbridge said.
"What about Lord Voldemort?" Harry asked making the whole class flinched at the sound of the name.
"Ten points from Gryffindor, Mr. Potter. Let me set the record straight." Umbridge said, standing behind her desk and leaning on her knuckles. "Some of you have been told that a certain dead wizard has returned. This is a lie."
Harry stands up, knocking his books to the ground, a look of livid rage on his face. "It-is-NOT-a-LIE!"
"Mr. Potter, you have just landed yourself in detention!" Umbridge said.
Harry moves around his desk stiffly, trembling with rage, his eyes dangerous.
Harper stood up and moved behind Harry, pulling him into his chest as Harry took multiple deep breaths to calm himself down.
