I opened my eyes only to find that it was still dark outside. Rolling onto my side, I tug at the cord that snaked up onto my bedside table. My phone came tumbling down, landing onto my face with a soft thump.
"Fuck, that hurt." I hissed, pulling my phone away from my face to check the time. 5.23am. "Great." I mumbled to myself.
"Morning, Inez!" Odette chirped. I growled. Stupid wolf.
"Hey! Play nice. Today is going to be a good day." She said.
"What makes you say that, wolfie?" I ask.
"I don't know. I can feel it." She responded, her tail wagging.
Hi, my name is Inez Holloway. I've just turned 18, which means I could find my mate any day now. I don't really want to. Not after seeing how hurt my father is after losing my mother. It happened over three years ago now and it's been hard on all of us, but my father has been hit the worst.
The pain of losing your mate is incomprehensible. He is the shell of the man he used to be. His wolf, Byron, is no longer present. He has retreated so far back in his mind, we're not sure if he will ever be able to shift again. He can barely function day to day. I'm really not sure how he's survived for so long without his mate. My eldest brother, James, has been the most affected out of all of us. He is the future alpha, and has had to step up to care for my siblings and I (all five of us), while taking care of the pack and alpha duties. I don't want that to happen to me, or my mate. It's not fair on anyone really.
My mother was killed by rogues. Rogues are packless wolves. A wolf needs their pack to survive, otherwise madness sets in. I've heard it can take up to a year for the madness to set in, but it depends on the wolf. As you would've guessed, the madness makes them a threat to packs. They're ruthless. They kill for fun. It is the one thing that can instil fear in a wolf. That being said, so can wolfsbane and silver, but that's besides the point.
If you haven't already guessed, I'm a werewolf. I'm the daughter of the Alpha of the Moonlit Crest Pack. My wolf's name is Odette. I can talk to her in my mind and she's been a constant source of comfort for the last two years. Werewolves, or wolves, shift when they turn 16, but they don't find their mates until after their 18th birthday. Weird, I know, I guess it's so you can get used to having your wolf being around before you're stuck with someone else for the rest of your life.
I have five brothers. The eldest is James, he's 26, followed closely by Hunter who is 25, Louis is 22, Jordan is 21 and last but certainly not least is my twin Anton (I'm the eldest twin - every second counts). Growing up in a house full of boys was, well... an experience. They are quite something. The fights between them caused by the constant need to one up each other, and oh god the smell! I guess it wasn't all bad, because I wouldn't change them for the world. They've all found their mates, except for me, which I'm quite glad about. Growing up, I always wanted to find my mate. Everything changed the day my mother died.
That aside, I should probably start getting ready for training. We have training every morning, from 6am until 7.30am. Every wolf starts properly training as soon as they're able to shift, although, some of the lower ranking members (aside from the warriors) don't train every day. I drag myself out of my nice and comfortable bed, my feet padding across the cold wooden flooring into my bathroom. I finally will myself look at my reflection in the mirror above my sink, and I almost cringe.
"Goddess, human. You look like you've been dragged through a hedge." Odette cringed.
I chuckled and pulled my long hair out of the bun I'd shoved it in last night and began running my brush through it. The knots tugging every time the bristles hit one. My hair is the same colour as my mother's, it's a cool beige blonde. I know I look like my mother, we have almost the same features, but I have bangs which sets me apart from her. I got them after she died, I couldn't look in the mirror without breaking down. I continue on with my morning routine, and getting dressed into a sports bra and some leggings, before heading down to the kitchen to grab something for breakfast. I was met with the amazing smell of pancakes, bacon and the smell of one of my brothers. He must've cooked this morning. Our mother used to cook breakfast for us, but now we usually take it in turns to cook.
"Morning, Hunter." I say as I dump some pancakes and bacon onto my plate.
"Morning, you're in a good mood for you this morning." He said, his eyebrow raised.
I'm not usually a morning person, but Odette's excitement and happiness was so strong, it was radiating off of me.
"It's not me, it's Odette. She's woken up with a right spring in her step this morning. I don't know what's up with her. How's dad doing? Is he still in bed?" I ask.
Hunter nodded and I turn my attention to my breakfast. I start shoving some pancakes into my mouth, I don't have much time before I need to head to training.
"Yeah. He's still in bed. I've not heard from the others this morning." He said, plating up some pancakes and bacon for himself.
"That's strange. They're usually up as soon as they smell food. " I say with a shrug.
"James is meeting some Alpha's this morning about our rogue problem. He didn't say who they were. They're also here to see if their mates are in this pack since they haven't found theirs yet. I know that you don't want to find yours, so I'd stay clear of them and the pack house if I were you. You don't want to risk it."
I nod and give him a soft smile. I'm glad he understands my position. I don't want to go through what my father's going through. Losing your mate is the worst thing a wolf can go through. I quickly finish off my food and put my plate in the dishwasher before heading for the door.
"I'll see you later Hunter!" I shout.
"Come on, we're going to be late! Move it human!" Odette practically screamed at me. She's been doing circles in my head. Jumping about like a happy little puppy.
"What's gotten into you today? You need to calm down. We can go for a run later if that makes you happy?" I say to her, trying to bargain with her. Her excitement was starting to give me a headache.
Odette gives me a growl of approval at the mention of a run, before sitting at the back of my min. Finally, I'm going to get some peace.
I head over to the training ground and spot my best friend, Lindsay. Lindsay was the daughter of the Beta. She's the same age as Anton and I. I don't know what I'd do without her. She's been my best friend since we were toddlers. Our parents were good friends with our parents, so we've basically grown up together. She's around 5'9", while I'm only 5'6". She spots me and starts running over. I however, was not ready for the assault that was about to happen on my ears.
"Oh goddess, Inez!" She shrieked. "Have you heard about the alpha's that are coming today? I heard that they're so hot!" She squealed. Her excitement was also giving me a headache.
"Please, Lindsay. Not you too. For the love of the goddess, will you please zip it. Odette has been on edge since I woke up. She won't calm down. You're both giving me a headache." I say, probably a bit too harshly.
Lindsay grumbled. It was something along the lines of "kill joy", but it was so quiet I couldn't hear it properly, even with my hearing. I shoot her a glare and turn my attention to the warrior that was in charge of training today.
Training went by quickly and I soon found myself on the way back to the house to get ready for school. To say it was a rush is an understatement. Morning training always leaves very little time to get ready for school. I shower, get changed and pack my things before heading out to the car where Lindsay and Anton were waiting for me. We get in the car and start making the short journey to school.
