"Let's go and remember to stay on guard and watch the hand signs. Do not get separated." Rogers tells them one last time before they enter the camp. He automatically holds up the 'stop' signal and feels the others slightly bump into his back. 'Slow and steady.' he mouths. The atmosphere is so tense that it's almost too suffocating to be in. Even though the group has been through many herds and swarms by this point, the situation still gives them anxiety and riddles their bodies with uneasiness. And this time is much worse since there is a zombie at every turn. Slowly, they move forward and everything is going fine until they reach the middle of the camp. They huddle together in a small open space, sweat dripping down their noses. "Everyone doing okay so far?" Nodding ensues. "Great. This is the worst part of the entire thing and once we get through this, it'll be smooth sailing from here on out." Rogers whispers.
"Get your weapons ready." Ayden tightens her grip on her spear, Y/N clutches her knife while Anjelo's hands rub together anxiously. "I don't have anything." he whispers, body tensing and stilling whenever the undead pass by him. "Take this." Rogers says as he passes Angelo his own knife that the army gives to every new recruit, "Only use it sparingly. Only take them out if they get too close for comfort." A hand sign is thrown into the air as the group begins walking forward again. The zombies' rapid clicking teeth become more persistent the more they travel the barracks. "I miss you." a zombie mocks, causing Y/N to bite her lip. "Help me!" another mocks. The squelching of blood as it comes from a lifeless corpse can be heard every now and then. Rogers stops briefly before turning to the left and going down a long hallway. A light can be seen on the farthest wall, it becoming brighter the closer you get to it.
"This is almost over." Rogers whispers as he ducks to the side to avoid getting scratched by a passing zombie, "Let's end this strong!" They kill off multiple zombies before they finally make it to the outside of the camp. "Good job, maggots. You survived." "That was a horror game if there ever was one." Ayden comments with a shake of her head. "But you made it out unscathed." Rogers says as he begins to clap his hands together, "Congratu-" It was like someone had pressed slow motion on a tv remote and was currently watching to see what details they could point out. The happiness that slowly turned into horror? Check. The way that a zombie seemed to have super speed and tackled Rogers? Check. The way that the trio killed it and then immediately checked on the soldier? Triple check. "You alright?!" "Did it get you?!" "I've been worse, recruits. I'll manage." Rogers says as he begins to twitch slightly.
"Here." Anjelo says as he tries to pass Rogers his knife, only to get rejected by a shake of the other man's head, "Keep it. Consider it my parting gift and congratulations to you all. Keep going straight and then turn to the right by a sign that says 'travel stop'. Before you know it, you'll be at Jericho." The twitching was now unavoidable and apparent to the others. "Good luck on finding your brother and I wish you luck in the rest of your endevors. Now, if you would excuse me, I would like to join my brothers." Rogers admits before turning on his heel and walking away. Ayden, Anjelo, and Y/N stay behind and watch him fight against the change to the best of his ability. He falls a couple times as he meets the rest of his camp. The soldier lets out one more scream of anguish before falling to the floor and becoming animated soon after. Tears slip from the trio's eyes as they run away from the scene, the fallen soldiers' attempts not forgotten.
"Keep going straight and turn right at a sign that says 'travel stop'". Y/N mutters to herself constantly. Anjelo keeps a grip on the knife, running his thumb along the edge of it to ground himself a tad. Ayden's head pivots around, constantly checking their surroundings. "What's that?" Anjelo wonders as a small square slowly comes into view. "Dunno. Let's see." They all make a beeline for the blurry outline and errupt into small cheers at the sight. "It's the 'travel stop' sign! We're almost there!" More cheers and high fives spread around the small group as they turn right and continue going forward. "The snow doesn't look like it's as high as it was back there, so we should be able to move fairly quickly." Y/N mutters before wrapping her arms around Ayden and Anjelo's shoulders. "I'm proud of us! I just hope that Jericho has free beds. I can't tell you how happy I would be over getting to sleep in an actual bed and not have to worry about the zombies trying to break in."
"Agree with that!" Before long, their walking comes to a halt as they approach two giant fortified walls. "Who are you and what do you want?" a person says from atop of the walls. "Y/N, Anjelo, and Ayden. We're here because we're looking for her brother." Y/N says while she motions towards Ayden. The guard stares at them for a while, their mouth moving but no words being heard. "Any of y'all bit?" "No. Had a close call a while back, but we're clean." 'That's an understatement.' Ayden thinks to herself. Silence envelopes them like a warm blanket as small snowflakes begin to litter the sky. "Come in. Once inside, you'll be subjected to a check-up and a shower accompanied with clean clothes." The walls seperate and the inside looks nothing like the outside as people run around and children laugh with each other. "Don't act a fool and welcome to Jericho."
