On a weekend, the Sojouner family was doing their own thing.
RC and Ida were walking down the hallway to get some food .
When they heard Ruben in the Living room.
Ruben was playing a guitar and singing a song
Ruben :" the thrill is gone ~ the thrill has gone away"
RC:" Ruben what are you singing? Never heard that genre before"
Ida turned to RC
Ida:" It is one of the oldest African American genres, Blues"
RC:" Blues?, I though African Americans made only R&B, Hip-Hop, and Rap."
Ruben chuckles himself.
Ruben;"That's what everyone thinks because it is out there. There Is more to African American music than people realized."
RC :" What is the Blues?"
Ruben:" The Blues, came out during 1860s at the end of Slavery, their origin came from Chants, Spirtuals, and Work songs that Slaves would express their pain,
The Blues came from the Mississippi Delta were our family is from.
The Blues develop during After the civil war. Which even though African Americans were free the fight was still not over.
Lynchings, poll taxes, and the government pardoning Confederates. Which came to the end of Reconstruction which the government abandoned African Americans to fight for themselves.
The Blues were made as a coping mechanism for people. To deal with the trouble times they were in. "
RC and Ida looked on in shock .
RC;" So, how did you get involved with this music.
Ruben smiled.
Ruben:" My Dad, he was a tough man. Had to be in Mississippi back in those days. It is was the worst state to be in if you where black.
He always sing one song when. I was around him when I was older. I asked about him about it.
Ruben looked up thinking sadly about his dad.
I reminded him of his friends he fought and losted in WW2. And the treatment they had to deal with. "
Ida
Ida:" Daddy, can you play the song?"
RC:" I would like to hear it as well.
Ruben grinned
Ruben:" Sure,"
Ruben started to play the guitar to the tune and sing
The song went through Ida's and Rc's ears.
The guitar played a sorrowful and soulful tune.
Ruben:"

After a while, Ida and RC were in awe
Ruben:" So, What do you guys think?"
RC:" I could feel the pain in your voice. "
Ida:" The song was sad but, there was a beauty to it. "
RC": There was power in your voice."
Ruben:" the Blues is a interesting genre. The artist was named B. B King. "
Ruben : Well, that is enough singing. I will go grab some ice cream. "
RC and Ida": Okay!!!"
