Let's get one thing straight: Yeonjun is not the forgetful kind.

He's not the person you'd expect to forget his favorite black-and-white striped cardigan at his friend's house for a math peer-teaching session. He's not the kind to forget his lunchbox at home and having to make do with 3rd class snacks from the school canteen. Likewise, you wouldn't expect him to pretend to forget at what time his next class is just so he isn't the only one who gets marked late.

But these things he'll do without second guessing, he'll do these things if a certain doe-eyed, lame joke-maker, messy-haired Beomgyu steps foot in the picture.

He'd do it because he wants to go back to his house and see him in his oversized sweatshirt one more time by using the pathetic excuse of fetching his cardigan. He'd eat in the school canteen rather than accompanying imaginary friends in the garden if it meant he could have Beomgyu by his side, even if he nibbles on his chocolate chip cookie like a chipmunk who never learned to grow up. He's ready to get scolded by the teacher (despite his clean record) if he's late just because he lost track of time listening to Beomgyu talking about his dreams of wanting to become Superman and how the first step of that dream would be to save a cat from a tree.

Beomgyu is still unaware of his effect on Yeonjun, and thankfully so. Beomgyu was, by nature, an oblivious creature. He is rendered unable to even catch the slightest hint of what Yeonjun is feeling for him is more friendly than what is considered normal. For context, he can't tell how to solve a geography question even if the answer stared him right in the face.

But just as much as Beomgyu is unobserving, Yeonjun takes just as much of an extra effort to be careful. It's better to be safe than sorry, this he has learned from previous experience. This is the rule of thumb he'll follow in all walks of life, depending on how dire the situation is. And this— by textbook definition, this secretive plethora of heavenly pleasures exploring inside him when Beomgyu as little as glances his way, is the most dire situation he's ever faced, one that he thinks himself of being fortunate enough to.

So let's begin again, shall we? Let's get one thing straight: Yeonjun is not.

Yeonjun doesn't want to sound selfish as he says this. But by all accounts, Beomgyu is not a perfect person. He has these eye boogers that he forgets to clean out the crevices of his eyes as he prepares to come to school, so Yeonjun has to remind him before they enter the classroom. He's unorganized, forgets to remove personal items (such as notes, photographs, letters) from his notebook before he hands it over to Yeonjun on a day where he's absent and has tons of missing study notes accumulated on his to-do list. He leaves studying for a progress check test to the very last minute, sometimes flipping through the pages of his textbook just moments before the teacher announces the exam is about to begin.

In stressful phases of his life, he forgets to brush his teeth several days on end, so Yeonjun, who has had enough being in the presence his stinky breath, forces him to do the job in front of him. He has an unhealthy obsession with reading manhwa and has already handwritten Yeonjun several lists of recommendations of Manhwa, titled "manhwa you should read before you die." Nagging him constantly, using it as a blackmailing technique. Even though he gifted Yeonjun an entire manhwa collection, with all the volumes intact, Yeonjun still hasn't gotten around to reading them all.

But possessing these qualities is what makes Beomgyu human. Yeonjun doesn't recall what was the first thing that made him feel as though Beomgyu was different from the rest. It happened gradually– one day Yeonjun could feel that all-encompassing demeanor that tells you you have no reason to be intimidated by him. He has that sun-shaped face, strawberry-shaped hair, still watches Barney & Friends to this day. And for one thing, Yeonjun has wanted to ask for him for so long what brand of shampoo he's been using but has been putting it off because of how weird it sounds. Not that it wasn't weird enough to be sniffing his hair every Monday morning.

He has that teddy bear kind of vibe to him, you don't feel as though you're meant to be anywhere else if you're with him... or is that just what Yeonjun feels? You could be swirling around weightlessly in outer space, petting some otter in a conservation museum, eating a Baskin Robbin's mint chocolate ice cream by yourself in the far corner, and can't help but think that every moment would have been better if Beomgyu was there. If you were doing all these simplistic, mundane things with Beomgyu instead.

At least that's what Yeonjun thinks.

Yeonjun hates to admit it, but he inadvertently adopts some strange doglike features when in the presence of Beomgyu. He starts to whine when he fails to get Beomgyu's attention. If he had a tail, it would wag around in excitement as he and Beomgyu talk about plans of meeting up somewhere outside of school. If Yeonjun could, go and fetch every ball Beomgyu throws, he'd snuggle up close to him and sleep, he'd follow him everywhere he goes like a hunter dog, sniffing up his trail. All that's left now is for Beomgyu to proclaim that he's up for adopting Yeonjun as a pet.

Yeonjun doesn't know how it happened. But one day his life was completely normal without Beomgyu in it, and the next he doesn't dare to imagine his life without him. For the first few days, rainbows exploded, fireworks rocked his beating heart with every loud 'boom!' and reverberated nonstop. Walking through every field felt like a meadow swimming with sunflowers even if it was quicksand, pulling in his feet underground.

Because it was so hard to wrap his head around, how he could feel this way not for the opposite sex but for Beomgyu specifically, he consulted his best friend and therapist-in-the-making, Soobin. He sat him down in an abandoned classroom (standard protocol, if you know what he means) and blabbered to him the most serious statement he's known to confess in the last 3 years that they've known each other: "I love Beomgyu and I don't know what to do about it."

Soobin, eyes widening in shock, took several moments to recover, but then he said something Yeonjun will remember in the following days, to remind himself that his feelings are valid whenever he saw Beomgyu and his god-awful adorableness as he complained to him that last night's Barney & Friends episode wasn't worth the wait, or how he misplaced his mom's Cookies & Cream mugcake recipe and tore the entire house down to find it, only to realize he had hidden it inside his treasure box the previous week.

Soobin said this: "What do you mean? You continue loving him, of course."
