It was a dark and stormy night, but the smallest glimmer of light entered Yeonjun's heart when the doorbell rang, and he opened up the front door to see Beomgyu standing flustered, rosy-cheeked, hair swept and slight raindrops dropping off from his bangs, under an umbrella. His eyes lit up as he met Yeonjun's and smiled that kind of smile that reaches his eyes, able to brighten up anybody's day.
The first thing Yeonjun asked was, "Why aren't you wearing anything warm? You must be shivering!" He quickly ushered him inside and grabbed a towel. "Are you that desperate to get sick?"
Beomgyu grabbed the towel and raced to Yeonjun's bedroom with a sly grin, leaving behind trail marks of mischief as he went, screaming all the way, "I'm going to get a movie ready for us to watch!" Meanwhile, Yeonjun shakes his head and chuckles lightly at Beomgyu's childish personality. He heads to the kitchen and prepares Beomgyu's favorite dessert: hot chocolate.
This was a tradition of theirs. In the winters, anytime the sky threatened to cry, or snow, or spoke in thunders and sent warnings of storms, Beomgyu would sprint to Yeonjun's house, where they'd cozy up together and watch nostalgia-inducing movies with packets of chips, cookies and more comfort food.
Once Yeonjun had made the necessary preparations and rushed to his room, he was surprised to see that the TV glared at him blankly; Beomgyu still hadn't decided on a movie. Lying down on Yeonjun's bed, he stared at the ceiling, legs swaying back and forth in the air.
Sensing Yeonjun's presence, he sits up straight and waves him over, a soft smile ever-present on his lips. Yeonjun sits the tray onto his bedside table as he makes his way towards him. Beomgyu layed his head on Yeonjun's belly and made motions in the air with his fingers, tracing invisible somethings on the ceiling.
He breathed out slowly. "You know one thing I've never told you?" He glances at Yeonjun and sees him shake his head. "I wish I never grew up. Things were so much better when I was young. I was freer, people were nicer, chocolates were cheaper. I know I'm still young but... I wish I was younger."
Yeonjun let the truth of this settle in his heart, when all of a sudden Beomgyu hopped on the bed, bringing himself up to a sitting position and crossing one leg over the other. He booped Yeonjun's nose with a note of playfulness in his melodious laugh. "But of course, if I wished to remain a child then I never would have met an amazing friend like you."
Yeonjun smiled at him, beaming. Although he hastened to add that even if they were forced apart, destiny would still bring them together someday, somehow. That's what Yeonjun felt their relationship was like. He used to revel in the fact that he was God's favorite; that's why He's showering him with blessings upon every factor of his life, mainly using Beomgyu. He wonders if this bond will ever be broken; and if it does, will his heart break too?
"Now you have to tell me one thing you're scared of." Beomgyu says with a pout of his lips and rests his head against Yeonjun's shoulders. Meanwhile Yeonjun finds himself relieved that he doesn't have to look Beomgyu in the eye while digging into the deepest pit of his heart to come up with something fruitful.
"I guess I've always had the mindset of running away when things are too good to be true. Like all my life I've been met with experiences time and again where something good has always proceeded something bad in my life, and that makes me scared whenever I do receive a gift from God that's out of my league, something I feel like I don't deserve." ('Like you,' he added in his mind)
"I think you deserve all the happiness in the world, Yeonjun." Beomgyu stares up at him expectantly, thoughtfulness dripping in every syllable of his words. Thoughtfulness Yeonjun doesn't feel he deserves.
"That's a bold assumption to make," Yeonjun chuckles. "Besides, you say that about everybody." He lightheartedly pinches Beomgyu's earlobe, sending him into a fit of laughter.
"No, I don't!" Beomgyu sputters out in self-defense. "For instance I'd never say that to criminals, or racists, or rude people. Some compliments I only reserve for you, alright!"
Yeonjun stares at Beomgyu for a long sequence of silenced moments before he says, "You're really naive, Beomgyu." Then he pulls him in, places his head against the crook of his neck, tapping against his head close-fisted and giggled, "I must protect you at all costs, my teddy bear."
