Two silhouettes could be barely made out should any passersby's eyes be laid upon them. The silhouettes were as still as the river they sat beside. They looked as if nothing better could have suited their time better than basking in the summer shine under the autumn foliage.
Limbs outstretched, taking turns of resting their heads on each other's shoulders, savouring the sips of peace that the surroundings offered like it was the most expensive wine.
The sun's golden, honey-suckled hues perfectly accentuated the impressive features of their faces, making them strangely resemble two angels on a momentary trip to Earth. Humans having an inhumane experience. Two souls conjoined by a single thread. Two heartbeats joined by a single rhythm.
"Can I ask you a question, Yeonjun?" The younger looked into the older's eyes, whose bright orbs reflected the cerulean blue of the crystal-clear, threatening to make him seem much sadder than he already was. "Why are you so adamant on growing up?"
A knowing glance flickered past his eyes as his doubts were confirmed: He knew the question before it even left Beomgyu's mouth. He exhales a long sigh and hugs his knees closer to his chest.
"It's not that I want to grow up, but rather I'm being forced to." His gaze drops down to the flowerbed beside him, his voice dropping softer. "I just can't wait to study abroad so that I can escape my parents' wrath."
"Same." Beomgyu nods in understanding. Everyday he finds new things that they both have in common, and everyday he thanks God for that opportunity. "I wish I was living on a completely different planet than my mother."
After some moments spent in quiet contemplation, Beomgyu bites his lips in hesitation, then asks. "In that case, if both of us go our separate ways. What, then, will happen to the promise we made of running away?"
Beomgyu hears Yeonjun's sharp intake of breath. Yeonjun's lips turn into a thin smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. But still, he's got to try everything in his ability to mask the truth for Beomgyu's sake, doesn't he? He can't let the younger know how they're already at the edge of teetering off the cliff that is their friendship.
His large, veiny hands grab Beomgyu's small, soft ones - his balmy touch sending spirals of warmth throughout Beomgyu's chilly insides. "What about it? We're still going to hold it up."
Yeonjun said it not so much to comfort Beomgyu than to reassure himself, but his voice cracked as he did. 'No, I'm not going to let anything break us apart!' Yeonjun firmly promised himself inwardly. 'No matter what happens!' - and with that he sealed shut the door of doubt in his mind, whereas for Beomgyu the door was just starting to creak open, inviting blood-churning monsters to lurk in the dark.
The deathly silence that encompassed them afterwards left them alone with their thoughts, making room for disasters to occur.
And that is when a terrifying doubt planted its seed in the rainforest of Beomgyu's mind, that perhaps Yeonjun's words might be a lie, that perhaps fate has something different in store for them. That perhaps they may never get to uphold their promise...
Not before they're separated first.
