It has been two agonizing years since David passed. I have turned my heart off with anyone except for my family.
Work is the same. I get assigned the rougher calls with no backup. I can't count the times that I have been assaulted on calls of domestic disputes, bar room brawls, and such. The chief just says that it is just a part of the job.
I haven't told any of them who my family is. So they can't say that I am using my familial connections.
I finish a traffic stop, just in time for another call. This one will be a bad one. The Baker twins are always drinking. If it is just beer, they are funny and want to dance with anyone who will dance. If it is whiskey, they get violent and want to fight everyone. It doesn't matter if you are wearing a badge, overalls, or a skirt.
Apparently, tonight, they chose whiskey. I pull up to the house that Warren Baker lives in. They are outside sitting around a campfire. I get on the radio and call again for backup.
"Sorry, 506, there's nobody available for backup." Dispatch responds.
"That figures! Can I get an ambulance if I request it? Or will that be unavailable, too?" I am fed up with this bullshit!
"Don't get snarky, Thomas!" Chief Brown says over the radio.
"This is the Baker twins. Everyone knows that they are violent when drunk on whiskey. Yet, I'm here with no backup. You know what is going to happen." I make a phone call after hanging up the radio.
I open the door to my suv. "I'm making contact with Warren and Darren." I say into the phone.
"On my way ,baby
I get out and approach the drunk twins. "Hey guys! What's going on here tonight?" I try to be cheerful.
"Well, if it ain't Jenny law dog! Nobody asked for the cops to come. You can leave now, bitch!" Warren says without turning to look at me.
"I apologize, Warren. I can't do that. We had a call that you were beating on Meg again." I look around for Meg but can't see her anywhere. "Where is she anyways?" I ask curiously.
Both men finally turn their heads to look at me. Then behind me. They smirk at each other. They both stood and started towards me.
I knew that I was in trouble. But that is why I called for backup from a higher power.
"Now you guys don't want to do that. Don't do something that you will regret later. You know that we go through this enough to know that I won't just stand here and take a beating." I try to talk sense to them.
But these two are too drunk to see reason. They are still coming.
"We know that you will put up a good fight. We always count on it." Warren replied.
"Who do you think told Meg to call the pigs? We did! I knew they'd send you. Cause they're cowards who won't help you." Darren added. "Now she's at her mom's house and you are here! Win win!"
They are almost on me now. I have a taser on both hips. I always do when I deal with these idiots. I don't want to accidentally kill one of them. If not both of them.
I just hope that dad gets here before too much happens. The guys both lunge for me at the same time.
Warren knocks the taser out of my hand. But I get one shot at Darren, and it connected. He went down.
Warren's fist connected with my nose, and mouth as I swung one at him. It connected but didn't phase him. He is "drunk tough." As dad says. Drunks don't feel the pain or react as a sober person would.
