CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
A Settled Succession

"THOUGH IT is the great hope of this court that Lord Coryls Velaryon survive his wounds, we gather here with the grim task of dealing with the succession of Driftmark. As Hand, I speak with the King's voice on this and all other matters." Otto Hightower spoke loudly so everyone in the Great Hall would hear him, then he sat down on the Iron Throne. "The crown will now hear the petitions."

In the Great Hall, there was a decently large crowd beneath the Irone Throne. Alicent Hightower and her children stood on the left side of the stairs that led to the throne while Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen stood across from them with their children and step-children on the right side of the stairs.

Baela stood beside her grandmother as Daenaera and Rhaena stood with Rhaenyra, Daemon, and their children. Jaehaera stood between her mother and father, but slightly behind them as well, with Jacaerys and his wife standing to her left. And Saera stood in front of Aemond but also right in between Aegon and her twin sister, Helaena.

"Ser Vaemond of House Velaryon." Otto called out for the Sea Snake's younger brother to speak his petition.

And Vaemond did so, he walked out of the crowd and stood in the middle of the Great Hall— in between the King's divided family. From slightly afar, Jaehaera and Daemon both watched him carefully and fully aware of what the man believed about Princess Rhaenyra.

"My Queen. My Lord Hand. The history of our noble houses extends beyond the Seven Kingdoms to the days of Old Valyria. For as long as House Targaryen has ruled the skies, House Velaryon has ruled the seas. When the Doom fell on Valyria, our houses became the last of their kind. Our forbearers came to this new land, knowing that were they to fail, it would mean the end to their bloodlines and their name." Vaemond kept his eyes on Otto as he spoke.

Daenaera, Jacaerys, and Jaehaera all shared a short glance as they recalled what Baela wrote to them about his spoken words on Driftmark. They knew where this was going without having to say anything to one another. Instinctively, Dany grabbed Jace's hand to silently reassure him with the conversation they had the night before.

He continued. "I have spent my entire life on Driftmark defending my brother's seat. I am Lord Corlys' closest kin, his own blood. The true, unimpeachable blood of House Velaryon runs through my veins."

"As it does in my sons, the offspring of Laenor Velaryon." Rhaenyra spoke up and Jaehaera's violet eyes fell on her mother, as did most of the eyes in the hall. "If you cared so much about your House's blood, Ser Vaemond, you would not be so bold as to supplant its rightful heir. No, you only speak for yourself and for your own ambition."
