Kavita's POV
"Chal ab khana parosh de. Khane ke baad kuch der aaram karunga," Sameerji tells me.
He had gone out of the village yesterday for his work, and returned about an hour back.
Nodding at him, when I start serving him, he abruptly stands up from his chair.
I frown, looking at his angry face.
"Ji, kya huwa?"
"Tujhe Maa ne bataya nahi ki main jab bhi dusre gaon ke safar se laut ta hoon, mujhe halka khana khane ki aadat hai?"
My frown deepens when I hear him. Because Maaji had not told me anything about it.
Before I could tell him that, Maaji enters the kitchen.
"Kya hua, Sameer? Tumne abhi tak khana kyun nahi khaya?" She asks Sameerji.
When he does not answer her, she looks at his plate and the food there.
"Yeh kya hai, Kavita? Tujhse maine kaha tha Sameer ke liye kuch halka banana. Tune banaya nahi?"
"Nahi, Maaji. Aapne mujh-"
"Aapne kaha tha iss se?" Sameerji asks Maaji, interrupting me.
"Haan. Maine bataya toh tha. Par yeh meri baat kahaan sunti hai," Maaji answers.
As soon as she says that, Sameerji clutches my wrist.
"Chal mere saath," he says, and starts pulling me towards our bedroom.

When we enter inside, Sameerji closes the door and locks it, all the while glaring at me.
Before I could tell him that Maaji was lying, he steps closer to me and roughly clutches my arms, pulling me closer to him.
"Tu iss ghar ki Bahu hai. Meri patni hai. Apni zimmedari thik se nibha nahi sakti tu?"
His tight grip was hurting me, and I was struggling to free myself.
But the more I try to free myself, the more he tightens his grip over my arms.
"Main sab kuch achchhe se karne ki puri koshish kar rahi hoon. Apni zimmedari bhi achchhe se nibhane ki puri koshish kar rahi hoon."
The pain causes tears to gather in my eyes. But then too, Sameerji does not loosen his hold.
"Achchha? Aise koshish kar rahi hai tu?" He shouts, before leaving my arms and pushing me away.
I stumble, but somehow stop myself from falling to the floor.
"Pichhli baar Maa ne kaha tha ki tu unse jubaan ladati hai aur unki baat nahi sunn ti. Aur aaj bhi tune unki baat nahi suni. Aisi kaisi koshish hai teri?"
"Mera yakeen kijiye, Sameerji. Maaji ne mujhse kuch nahi kaha tha."
"Toh tu kehna chahti hai ki meri Maa mujhse jhoot bol rahi hain?"
"Main bas ye keh rahi hoon ki unhone mujhe halka khana banane ko nahi kaha tha. Aur main jab se iss ghar mein aayi hoon, tab se maine apni har zimmedari achchhe se nibhane ki koshish kar rahi hoon."
"Achchha? Aisi baat hai?" Sameerji steps closer to me. "Toh aaj main bhi dekhta hoon kitne achchhe se tu koshish karti hai."
His words increase my nervousness. "Ji, matlab?"
"Jaa pehle mere liye kuch halka bana khane ke liye. Aur aaj se dhyan rakhna ki Maa teri shikayat mujhse naa kare.
"Main khane ke baad kuch der aaram karunga. Tu raat ko sab kaam khatam karke jaldi kamre mein aajana. Aaj tujhe raat bhar meri patni hone ki zimmedari nibhani hai."
