Kavita's POV
"Kya kaha tune? Phir se bol," Sameerji says, stepping closer to me.
"Baar baar bolungi, Sameerji. Aap ek balatkaari hain. Aap itne ghatiya insaan hain jisse pyaar toh kya main nafrat ka rishtaa bhi nahi rakhna chahungi."
I had no idea that pain coursing within me could give me such strength, for it is that strength which is keeping me upright even though I can feel the chill tightening my spine as I look at Sameerji's red eyes that were emanating nothing but fury towards me.
When he raises his hand, bringing it closer to my face, I flinch back, thinking he was going to slap me, but he only tucks the stray strands of my hair behind my ear.
"Abhi abhi tujhse kaha hai ki tujhse pyaar karta hoon. Isliye chal, teri baat se mujhe bhale hi bohot ghussa aaya ho, tujhe na hi kuch kahunga na hi kuch karunga," he says, a slight smirk in his face when he clutches my shoulder to stop me from stepping back.
"Chhodiye mujhe, Sameerji. Ab aapko mujhe haath lagane ka koi haq nahi hai."
"Dekh, Kavita," he says, tightening his clutch over my shoulder. "Main tujhse keh raha hoon ke kuch nahi karunga, par iska matlab yeh nahi ke tu mujhse kuch bhi kehti rahe aur main suntan rahun."
With much difficulty, I take his hand off my shoulder and move back from him.
"Thik hai. Mat suniye. Waise bhi, mujhe aapse jo kehna tha, main keh diya hai. Haan kuch sawalon ke jawaab chahti thi kyunki aisa lagta tha ki shayad unn jawaab se meri takleef thodi kam ho, par aapke jawaab ne mera dukh aur ghussa aur bada diya hai."
He shakes his head at me. "Achchha? Ab bhi ghussa hai tu? Bata kya karegi? Thodi der aur chillayegi? Chal chilla."
Sameerji starts walking towards me, and this time, I start stepping back from him.
"Chilla, Kavita. Jor jor se chilla," he says. "Aakhira kaar, rone aur chillane ke alawa kar bhi kya sakti hai tu? Tujhe ab issi ghar mein rehna hai. Maine keh diya hai ki main sirf tujhe apni patni maanta hoon. Isliye tu mere saath issi ghar mein rahegi."
"Main nahi hoon aapki patni. Surili aapki patni hai. Aur woh rahegi aapke saath iss ghar mein. Mujhe yahaan rakhne ka aapko ab koi haq nahi hai, Sameerji. Aapka ab mujhpe koi haq nahi hai," I say, stopping to step back when Sameerji also suddenly stops walking towards me.
"Thik hai. Patni bann ken ahi rehna, toh rakheil bann ke reh. Lekin rahegi toh tu yahin. Mere saath. Mere paas."
The pinch I feel at the word he just uttered for me brings tears to my eyes.
I was his wife until four days back.
But now, his mother has made me this house's maid and Sameerji wants to make me his mistress.
'Kitna aasaan hai inn logon ke liye. Jab chahe bhau kahe, jab chahe naukar, jab chahe patni kahe, jab chahe rakheil.'
Trying my best not to give in to the angst, I wipe my tears and look steadily at Sameerji.
"Aapki koi jaagir nahi hoon main, Sameerji, ki aap mujhe jo chahe woh bula sake. Main bhi ek insaan hai aur mera bhi pura haq hai yeh faisla karne ka ki main kahaan rahun aur kiske saath rahun. Iss ghar mein sab kuch seh ke bhi isliye reh rahi thi kyunki mujhe lagta tha aap mere pati ho aur yeh mera ghar hai. Par jab aap ke saath hi koi rishtaa nahi raha, toh iss ghar se bhi ab saare rishtey toot gaye hain. Isliye ab mera yahaan rehna mumkin nahi hai. Main kal shubhah hote hi yahaan se chali jaungi."
The moment those words escape my lips, Sameerji walks to me and clutches my arms with such force that I almost buckle due to the pain.
"Kya kaha tune? Mujhe chhodke jayegi tu? MUJHE CHHODKE JAYEGI?" He shouts, gripping my shoulder more tightly, making me hiss in pain.
