this place was the same as usual.

the sun was as bright as ever.

the grass soft and warm to the touch.

the frequent breeze that blows past never fails to send a chill down his spine.

as he entered the house, he noted how the curtains were drawn, in the living room and the kitchen.

this house was always cold and quiet.

if he was being honest, he did not like being here.

it made him feel alone.

she must have felt this way too.

he searched the house, but there were no signs of her.

the boy made his way towards her room, the last place he had yet to check.

maybe she was sleeping.

he tapped his fist against the door before sliding it open.

the room was empty.

the bed was made, and the decorations she put around the room were all gone.

the clock on the wall that usually ticks backwards has stopped ticking.

it made him wonder if she was ever here in the first place.

an old book on the desk caught his attention.

she did leave something behind, after all.

he picked the book up, treating it with much care. as if it, too, would disappear if he was not careful enough.

her doodles and sketches were still on the pages.

so was his drawing of her.

he wondered if she liked it.

flipping to the next page, he expected an empty one. however, there was a handwritten note taking up the space.

it was her handwriting.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

dear tanjiro,

thank you for being my
friend and the first boy i
fell in love with. i enjoyed
every moment we spent
together, and i hope you did,
too. i also want to apologise
for not keeping the promise.
but i think we both knew it
was an empty one, just to make
the goodbye less painful. it didn't
really work, though, did it? anyway,
thank you for everything.
don't forget me, okay?

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

[y/n] had always felt faraway, yet tanjiro had never failed to reach her. it didn't matter how many times she disappeared. he would always find a way to catch up to her.

and he knew. he knew it might end differently this time. but a small part of him still thought that maybe if he tried hard enough, maybe if he held onto her tight enough, he could see her again. even if it was for the last time.

but alas, this fleeting dream of his came to an end. the girl he fell in love with was truly out of reach this time, and he will never dream this same dream, nor will he ever see her again.
