Darcy Arlo Carrington

"What do you think, Adam?" I asked him.

He guarded Katherine for three days while I was away doing signing paper for the golden apple farm to be traded with Antony.

Adam looked at me with confusion.

"About her?" I asked.

"You asked me this before, Your Grace." He says.

I rolled my eyes, "I'm asking you what happened during these three days."

"She likes. . ." he pauses. "Daisies."

"Daisies?" I furrowed my brow. "Is that all you got?"

Adam nodded.

Whoever Katherine was, she's not the old Katherine anymore. Something is different. Something changed. She even softened Adam which isn't an easy thing to do.

"You may go now." I command.

He bowed and left the room leaving me alone in my own thoughts.

What am I doing? Marrying someone I don't even know and I don't even love.

_

Knock. Knock.

"Come in." I hear Katherine permits.

I step into the room and see Lady Katherine standing there. She looks elegant as always. Facing the window, looking at something.

"Briana, I wonder of we could go to the City Market today. I heard there sell extraordinary things there." I can see her smile while looking down the window.

You can't see the City Market from the palace so what is she looking at?

"Good Morning, My Lady." I greeted.

She immediately looks at me widening her eyes.

"Y-Your Grace, I didn't expect you so e-early in the morning." She stuttered.

"Why not?" I say raising my brow.

She seems to realise something and gave me a glare. "What do you want, Your Grace?"

"Are you still mad about what happened at my chamber?" I asked with a neural face.

"Maybe?" She says looking away, folding her arms.

"I heard you went to the Royal Garden yesterday." I try to get her attention. "Did you like it?"

"Sir Adam is such a nice companion, how can I not enjoy the lovely moment spent with him?" She smiles and looks at me.

A sudden range of anger brush past me as I hear Katherine talk about Adam like that. I don't even know why but I never expected I would get this feeling.

As I try to mask my frustration, I take a deep breath and respond, "Yeah, I guess Sir Adam is a nice companion. I'm glad you had a lovely time with him in the Royal Garden."

She nodded. "May I ask why you are here-"

"What about the City Market?" I asked without letting her finish her sentence.

"I-Nothing...Forget what I said." She stammered again.

"If you want to go there, I can accompany you, My Lady." I say.

"Why would you?" She asked tilting her head. "Why are you being so nice, Your Grace?"

Her words caught me off guard. That's right. Why am I asking to accompany her? I hate her. She's the Baron's daughter. She doesn't deserve the kindness I'm giving her but not accompanying her means she'll go with Adam which means she will get to spend time with him again while I'll rot in the palace shuffling through unnecessary papers.

"My Lady, It is my duty to protect you as I promised the Baron that I would take care of you." I say without making myself suspicious.

" I have no intention for this marriage, however, your father is a cunning man and forced me into this. Do not accept me to treat you like a Lady or a Duchess just because you became my wife." She muttered the exact words I said on the first day we met.

"That's really not what I mean-"

Lady Katherine looked at me, her eyes filled with a mix of skepticism and curiosity.

"You expect me to believe that, Your Grace? After all the coldness and indifference you've shown me?"

Her words left me speechless. She's good at this.

"Adam will accompany you." I say. Deep down, something's bothering me. I don't know what but the urge to go with Katherine is hitting hard.

"Thank you for your concern." Lady Katherine spoke without looking at me.

What happened to the Katherine who loved me insanely? What happened to the Katherine who would die to hangout with me? Why is she ignoring me now? What changed these past two years?

_

"Sir Adam, isn't it fascinating how the city comes alive during the daytime?" Katherine exclaimed with excitement.

Adam remained silent, simply nodding as Katherine continued to chatter.

I find myself positioned discreetly behind the walls in the corner of the market. It may appear as though I am observing someone, but my sole intention is to keep a watchful eye on Katherine. We still have reservations about trusting her completely. Nothing else.

I observe Katherine's face light up as she takes in the sight of children holding their parents' hands, couples purchasing matching items, and friends searching for the perfect birthday presents. It seems to provide her with a sense of entertainment and joy.

The old Katherine would never admire such things. She would think about jewels, golds, expensive clothes and many more.

I shouldn't have followed them here.

I should go now. The more I'll stay, the more it'll be harder for me.

_

Knock. Knock.

"Come in." I shout.

"You called for me, Your Grace?" Adam asked entering the room.

"Adam, I need you to deliver this paper to His Majesty. Make sure to deliver them to his hands and no one else. Understood?" I command.

He nodded, bowed and left with the papers.

This head ache is killing me. It occurred since I came back in the mansion and it's getting worse time to time.

I should go take a stroll at the garden. I got up from the chair and went on my way to the Royale Garden hoping this stress would go down.
