Y/N
The double doors swung open. The hinges only gave the slightest screech as they were forced to work. Leon hesitated and made sure to stay ahead of us as we entered, surely prepared for the worst. With his gun drawn, his biceps threatened to rip the seems of his shirt. I swallowed hard, trying to keep my eyes on our surroundings in stead of on him.
Ashley was breathing so heavily i almost felt like we wouldn't even be able to tell if we were being ambushed. Her fingertips would brush against me in some way every now and then just looking for some form of comfort. I could tell she never meant to by the way she would immediately draw them back.
To our surprise, nothing was beyond the door accept for another old room and some hallways. No weird zombie cult people, no weird bugs or even that tiny midget guy with the founding father's hair style.
"This doesn't mean we're out of the clear. He wants to throw us off so keep your guard up." Leon sternly stated as he began searching the perimeter. Ashley looked between Leon and I and swallowed, which was shockingly louder than her breathing.
Leon put his gun away, making sure to keep his hand hovering just above the holster as he assessed our surroundings. We break open the vases and decorative pots put on display in the room, simple coins are the only things revealed thankfully. It was nice to get a break. Although I doubt Leon would call it that. I just know that every muscle in his body is tense with suspension and anticipation as he waits to be ambushed.
I know he is scared too, but a bystander would never be able tell under the facade he wears.
"Ready yourselves." Leon's voice startled me a bit as refocused on the coin I currently had in my hand. I had been doing that more often lately, zoning out as the thought of him suffocated my brain, leaving me high with him in my state of ecstasy.
"What's going on? There's nothing in here." Ashley questioned, inching closer to me by the minute. Fingertips on, fingertips off, fingertips back on, fingertips off.
"Midget guy got something ready for us, we just need to be ready for anything that might happen as we move through the castle." I answered, earning a nod from Leon as he reloaded his gun chamber.
"Well... in that case... maybe..." Ashley paused locking her hands behind her back in an innocent manner.
"Maybe?" Leon questioned as we moved through the hallway to the next set of double doors.
"Maybe... I should have a gun-
"NO!" Leon and I spoke in unison, pausing in our tracks. Ashley's face grew red and she smiled.
"Jeez, okay mom and dad..." She jerked her head at the last three words. Leon scoffed, shaking his head before he gave me a look. It was cute and funny at the same time. I couldn't help but smile at him.
Leon moved before us this time not hesitating as he swung the double doors open. The door didn't squeak as we entered a room filled with bubbling, black fountains. Railings and balconies filled the spaces between the fountains. Architecture I never thought to exist.
The smell was absolutely horrid, and the ooze flowing from the fountains was thick and sticky.
"Oh my god. I'm gonna die just from the smell." Ashley winced, covering her nose as she gagged on the putrid air.
"Shhh!" Leon shushed her, quickly holding his hand out before her.
"Rude, How are you guys okay right now?" She questioned, continuing to gag on the air.
Leon swung his head back glaring at her. "Shut up Ashley!"
He inched closer.
"Leon, why are you being so rude?" She questioned, making a face at him.
Just as she finished her sentence, Leon dodged a swinging ghoul that we failed to hear coming. Ashley's chatter and the sound of the fountains made it just about impossible to hear anything else in the room.
I pulled out my pistol being careful not to hit Leon as I opened fire. With three bullets and the thrust of his knife the ghoul was down. But that was they very least of our problems, because soon the entire room was swarming with them, and they were all after us...
"Ashley hide!" Leon demanded, as he retrieved his shot gun. Ashley dove into a barrel by a fountain we had been trapped by. At least we knew she waws safe in there until we could finish things. I did what I could with the hand gun I had until his shot gun shells took out what I couldn't.
My gun clicked, spreading goosebumps down my neck and arms. A cold sweat broke out on my forehead before Leon's arm tugged me into the space behind him.
"Load up. I've got you." He yelled over the chaos, before shoving another shell into the chamber of his shot gun. My fingers moved faster than my brain could comprehend, and before I knew it I was opening fire again.
"Thanks!"
He nodded, keeping his eyes on the remaining ghouls surrounding us. I'd say there were around thirty before, and though it's still a lot, thirteen is better than 30.
Leon and I continued opening fire, before Ashley perked her head out of the barrel.
"GUYS!! EXPLOSIVES!" She held up a red object, the barrel she had been hiding in was marked TNT. Leon continued to shoot and reload, covering us as I helped her out of the barrel. We pushed it over, rolling it towards the clique of surrounding ghouls.
"NOW!" Leon shouted across the room, as we ran and dove on the floor behind him. Ringing filled my senses followed by the sensation of hot air. I swiveled my head as fast as I could to watch the success we had just achieved. The ghouls stood there wobbling in what remained of the explosion. Fire blocked their path to us.
I felt myself smile as Ashley elbowed me with a proud look on her face. I hugged her, earning a giggle from her. And even Leon was grinning now.
