The Mutant World [UNFINISHED]

"Alright, class let's get started," the teacher begins as people stand against the walls of the classroom. My first class is with Nathan who is standing next to me now, shifting slightly back and forth on his feet anxiously. The teacher is a tall man with brown hair with speckles of grey.

"As you all know, this is the last few months of schooling and the transitioning period before training," the man continues, his beard bobbing up and down while he talks, "We are going to be doing a lot of projects and group work, so I have assigned you all a partner."

The entire class, including myself, groans slightly at the thought of not being able to choose who we work with. Nathan and I glance at each other and I can see the fear in his eyes. Nathan dislikes new people and new things -- especially when he has no say in the matter -- so this is kind of a nightmare for him.

"Yeah, yeah," the teacher begins again, waving his hands to silence us, "I tried to put people with the same secrets together, although, a few of you will have a partner with a different secret."

I see Nathan stiffen up out of the corner of my eye. I lightly pat his shoulder in an attempt to calm him down. He jumps once I touch him but quickly relaxes as he smiles at me in gratitude.

"First up," the teacher begins, "invisibility secrets, Nathan and Kate. Step forward please."

Nathan takes a deep breath and steps in front of me. A girl with a brown braid going down her left shoulder steps forward. She is wearing pants that have holes in them and a plaid shirt. One of her eyebrows goes up as she studies Nathan.

The teacher glances at both of them, then nods and points to a pair of tables closest to his desk. Nathan and Kate walk to the desks with backpacks in hand. The girl sits down roughly and Nathan sits delicately in the closest seat to the teacher.

"Next, fire secrets."

I watch Nathan start a conversation with Kate. She nods halfheartedly before crossing her arms and turning to stare ahead.

Partners begin to fill in the desks next to them.

"Water secrets."

Nathan perks up as if he has an idea. He leans down and rumages through his bag for something. Kate begins to twirl her hair in her hand and leans her head as if bored by the wall in front of her.

"Earth secrets."

Nathan pulls out a small package of some kind and taps the girl on the shoulder. She quickly turns to face him full of fury.

"Air secrets"

Nathan quickly puts his hand up in apology and offers her the package. Kate stares at it in his hand for a while before grabbing it. I notice that it's a pack of gum as she opens it and removes one piece.

"Metal secrets."

I can see Nathan's chest rise and fall in a sigh of relief. Kate then returns the pack of gum to Nathan and rest her arms calmly on the desk in front of her.

"Strong secrets."

Nathan glances back at me and we share a short smile.

"Wing secrets."

 I quickly snap back to reality and focus my attention back on the teacher. 

"Alice and Emily."

I step forward and so does another girl. She has a dress that looks very expensive and thin and her wings are pure white and shimmers in the sunlight coming through the class windows. I can't help but open my mouth in awe.

"Everyone," the teacher begins, fixing his already straight clothes, "this is Emily, daughter of the elite leader Ezra."

Everyone turns to face her and great applause is aroused. I clap politely and softly as I study Emily. Emily is the daughter of one of the three elite leaders. Her father is head of health and science for our island. There are rumors that he conducted experiments on her as a baby and that he tells her nearly all classified information.
