The bell rings signaling the end of the school day. Tara, Liz and I have planned a get together after school today, which is now just an hour away. I quickly get on the bus with a smile on my face. I am going to have an amazing night with the females of my friend group. I gently slide into my seat, passing Nathan on the way.
"You look awfully happy," Nathan states as I sit down.
"Girl's night is tonight," I explain, my smile growing wider. Nathan smiles a wide, toothy smile.
"How are you?" I ask the boy as I set my bag on my lap.
"I'm good," Nathan answers not knowing whether to look at the chair in front of him or my face.
"Good," I reply slowly, unsure of how to continue the conversation.
"How are you?" I suddenly hear Nathan ask me. My smile returns.
"I am super excited for girl's night," I state truthfully, turning to him excitedly.
"I can see," Nathan chuckles, glancing at me before looking down at his phone. I smile at him and then look out the window the entire ride home. Once the bus stops, I walk briskly back to my house.
"Hey Dad, I'm home," I tell the house when I open the door, "I'm going to Liz's tonight so-"
I walk around the house and realize my dad isn't here. I look at the coffee table where his notes usually lie. There is, in fact, a note that reads 'I'm out late tonight. Liz's mom talked to me about your playdate with Liz. Have fun. Don't forget your phone.' I grab my phone out of my bag and head out the door. Liz is a few roads down from me and just three houses down from Juno's house. But we aren't hanging with Juno or the guys today. Tonight is for the girls.
I walk down my home road and suddenly see someone I believe I recognize. He has brown hair that almost floats around his forehead, a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and is walking towards me. Once he gets closer to me, I know exactly who he is.
"Hugo?" I ask the boy.
"Alice?" he asks as we stop walking. He is about a foot away from me.
"Do you live around here?" I ask pointing to the houses.
"Uh yeah, one road down that way," he says pointing behind me, "Do you live around here?"
"Yes, one road down that way," I say pointing to my right.
"That's cool...Are you headed home?"
"No, to my friend's house."
"Fun."
"Yeah..."
"Hey, so are we friends?" Hugo asks suddenly.
"I think we are," I answer before asking hesitantly, "Are we?"
"Well, if it's alright with you, I'm down."
"You're down?"
"Yeah you know, all for it."
"Yeah sure. Let's just say we're friends."
"Okay great," Hugo replies casually, "Can I walk you to your friend's house?"
"What? Why?" I ask, frowning in question.
"Well one, we're friends, and two, I kinda wanna see your friends."
"Well, it's kinda a girl's night tonight."
"Great, only makes it better," Hugo chuckles, "Which way?"
I point in front of me and he turns around to walk with me.
"It's not that far away," I assure him, walking quietly as a soft wind blows through the feathers of my wings.
