What's so special about today?

As I stirred from sleep, the warmth of Lewis beside me enveloped me like a comforting embrace.

My eyes fluttered open to the soft light filtering through the curtains, casting a gentle glow over the room. A smile tugged at my lips as I realized it was Valentine's Day – a day dedicated to celebrating love, and I was lucky enough to be waking up next to the love of my life.

Feeling playful, I rolled over to face Lewis, planting soft kisses all over his face. His eyes crinkled with sleep as he returned my affections, wrapping his arms around me in a tight embrace. For a moment, everything felt perfect – just the two of us lost in our own little world.

But then, as if a dark cloud had descended upon us, Lewis's expression shifted. He frowned slightly, his brows knitting together in confusion.

"What's so special about today?" he asked, his voice tinged with annoyance. My heart sank at his words, the excitement I had felt bubbling up inside me dissipating like mist in the morning sun. How could he not remember? How could he not know?

"It's Valentine's Day, Lewis," I replied, trying to keep the disappointment from seeping into my voice.

He scoffed, pulling away from me slightly. "Valentine's Day," he muttered disdainfully. "Just another capitalist trap, if you ask me. A day invented by greeting card companies and florists to make us spend money on meaningless gestures."

His words cut through me like a knife, the harshness of his tone slicing through the tender bubble of anticipation I had been floating in moments before. Didn't he understand? Didn't he see how much this day meant to me?

"But... but it's not about the gifts or the money," I protested, my voice barely above a whisper.

"It's about showing each other how much we care, how much we love each other."

Lewis rolled his eyes, a frustrated sigh escaping his lips. "We don't need a designated day to do that, though," he argued. "We should be showing each other love and appreciation every day, not just when the calendar tells us to."

His words stung, each one a painful reminder of how differently we viewed this day. I had hoped for flowers and chocolates, for whispered words of love and heartfelt gestures. But instead, all I got was a harsh reality check – a reminder that maybe our love wasn't as perfect as I had thought.

As I lay there beside him, the warmth of his body no longer bringing me comfort, I couldn't help but wonder if maybe he was right. Maybe Valentine's Day was just a capitalist trap, a way to commercialize love and sell it back to us in pretty packaging.

But even as I tried to convince myself of that, a small part of me still longed for the romance and magic of this day – a day that was supposed to be about love, but had somehow left me feeling more alone than ever before.

Dragging myself out of bed, I wrapped a robe around myself, the soft fabric offering little comfort against the ache in my chest. The bathroom felt cold and sterile compared to the warmth of the bed I had just left behind, and I couldn't help but feel a pang of loneliness as I stepped into the shower.

The hot water cascaded over me, soothing my skin but doing nothing to ease the turmoil swirling inside me. My thoughts were a jumble of confusion and hurt, my heart heavy with the weight of disappointment.

Maybe Lewis was right – maybe we should show each other love and appreciation every day, not just on Valentine's Day. But that didn't change the fact that this day had meant something to me, something special and important.
