The sun beats down onto the Glade. Bang's and clang's ring from where the builders are pulling together a new wall on the Homestead. The group of Slicers cut wood and plants. Out in the Maze that surrounds the Glade, the Runner's run, and weave. And I stand amongst a garden.
Soon, the Box, which sits centre of the Glade, will rise. Inside will be the monthly supply shipment and a boy. The newcomer is nicknamed Greenie until they remember their name. then when they remember it Alby, who is head of command, will take them over to a piece of wall next to the North Door. The Greenie will then carve their name into the stone. Everyone has done it., and all the newcomers will too.
As I work on the Harvest, Alby comes over.
"Hey, Marcus. How's the Harvest going?'
"Hello Alby. And the Harvest sis going great." I pause my work and lean on one of the plants supports. "Just in time for the new Greenie."
"Yeah. You know four months ago that was you."
"Really."
Alby nods then claps me on the shoulder. "I have been thinking."
"Oh no. this is never a good start."
"Don't worry. All I wish is for you to tour the new Greenie and explain the way of the Glade."
"Okay. Sure."
"Alright." Alby nods at me then walks over to the Builders.
So, when the Box starts to make is annual metallic groaning, I join the others and watch as it comes up.
