Alby led Y/N out of the glade hall, the warmth of the sunlight casting a gentle glow over the surrounding walls. Gally watched them, his annoyance evident as he reluctantly returned to his duties along with the others, preparing for the night's bonfire.
As Gally worked, his mind couldn't shake the frustration that had built up within him. Sharing his hut with the new girl bothered him, especially considering her reckless run into the maze. Gally couldn't help but view her as trouble, a disruption to the order and routine of the glade.
Observing Alby guiding Y/N through the glade, Gally clenched his jaw, harbouring a growing irritation. He resented the fact that Alby had deemed her worthy of special attention, particularly after her breach of the maze rules.
As Alby walked alongside Y/N, he took a moment to explain his role in the glade. "I'm Alby," he said, his tone authoritative yet welcoming. "I'm the leader around here. We call this place the Glade, and we're all stuck here, trying to survive and find a way out."
They reached the watchtower, a structure that provided a vantage point over the entire glade. Climbing the wooden steps, Y/N marvelled at the expanse below. The gladers moved about their daily tasks, constructing, farming, and working together in a synchronised dance of survival.
As they gazed out over the glade, Alby turned to Y/N with a gentle yet probing look. "Can you tell me anything about yourself?" he asked, his voice laced with curiosity and concern. "Who you are? Where you came from?"
Y/N's brow furrowed as she tried to recall any fragment of her past, but her mind remained frustratingly blank. She shook her head in defeat, the weight of her forgotten memories pressing down on her. "I... I can't remember anything," she admitted, her voice trembling with uncertainty. Tears welled up in her eyes as fear gripped her heart.
Alby's next question hung in the air, a fragile hope that she might recall the most basic aspect of her identity. "Can you remember your name?"
Y/N shook her head, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "No," she whispered, the fear of the unknown gnawing at her. It was as if a part of her had been erased, leaving only a void in its place.
"Why can't I remember anything?" Y/N asked, her voice trembling with frustration and anxiety. The uncertainty of her past weighed heavily on her, leaving her feeling vulnerable and lost.
Alby offered her a reassuring smile, his expression understanding. "It's normal," he replied gently. "You'll remember your name in a day or two. That's the only thing they let us keep."
Feeling a bit more at ease with Alby's explanation, Y/N took a deep breath and surveyed her surroundings. The glade stretched out before her, a bustling hub of activity and life. "What is this place?" she asked, curiosity piquing her interest.
Alby gestured towards the various huts and gardens scattered throughout the glade. "This is our home," he explained. "We live here, eat here, sleep here. We build and grow what we need, and everything else the box provides."
"The box?" Y/N questioned, her curiosity piqued.
Alby nodded, "Yeah, it comes up once a month with fresh supplies and a new greenie."
"A new greenie?" Y/N furrowed her brow in confusion.
Alby grinned, "Yeah, and this month, that's you. Welcome to the Glade."
Y/N returned the smile, grateful for the friendly reception.
Curiosity burning within her, Y/N couldn't help but ask, "Do you know who brought us here?"
Alby's expression turned sombre as he shook his head. "I wish I knew," he replied. "No one remembers anything before the maze."
A pang of unease settled in Y/N's stomach at his words. "How long have you been here?" she inquired, hoping for some semblance of clarity.
