THE MILLER CHILDREN WHERE held in the Justice building waiting for the train to come and pick up them up this could take a long time due District Nine being one of the last District's to be picked up, the children were chained to a table so they couldn't run.
The Peacekeepers left the kids alone, the room was quiet, eerily quiet like the grim reaper's presence could already be felt, the Miller kids knew they were going to die and they just hoped it would be quick.
Barley scooted as close to Adam as she could, reaching her fingers across the table to grasp his own, this action caused the cuffs to dig into the skin and small cuts and marks to form but Barley didn't care.
"Hey!"Barley called as firmly as she could, Adam looked up at her tears still welling in his eyes. "When we're out there you stick to me like glue, you understand?"
The scared twelve-year-old just nodded not having the bravery to speak the two went back to sitting in silence, Barley felt guilt begin to creep inside her mind she had failed her brother when he needed her the most.
She had to make up for that by any means necessary.
Suddenly the door opened and the two Peacekeepers walked in they silently unlocked the tribute's cuffs neither making eye contact with contact with them before they grabbed one by the arm and leading them out of the room and onto the train platform.
The station was oddly quiet Barley had expected it to be more busy, the quiet was soon interrupted by the train approaching them but what awaited the Tributes from Nine was not a nice train compartment. It was a dirty cattle cart.
"Cause they think we're animals"Barley thought to herself.
The Peacekeepers holding Adam let go of him and walked over to one of the large cart doors and pulled it open the pair from Nine looked at the cart with disgust before the Peacekeeper holding Barley shoved her harshly.
"Move"He tells his voice full of unnecessary aggression the main clearly not being happy with his job.
"Alright, I'm going no need to be a shovey Shelia now is there"Barley told the Peacekeeper sarcastically.
Barley hauled herself into the cart before turning around and extending her arm out to Adam, he took hold of her arm and with extra support pulled himself into the cart, the door to the cart immediately slammed behind leaving them in darkness.
It took a few seconds for the Miller kid's eyes to adjust to the darkness, Adam grabbed hold of Barley's hand and the two of them slowly made their way over to a corner to sit down, when Barley looked around she could see four other children in the cart with them.
A girl with short red hair who looked about Barley's age, a small boy sat next to her who looked to be about Adam's age but he could be a little older, a girl with longer darker red hair with headband sat on top, and a older boy with a hat.
The children sat in a somewhat awkward silence before Barley noticed the earings in the short red red-headed girl's ears, Barley had always wanted to pierce her ears but her dad always said no.
"I like your earrings"Barley said breaking the silence.
Everyone's attention turned to face Barley."What?"The redhead asked her tone full of aggression and annoyance.
Barley cleared her throat before repeating herself. "I said I like your earrings"Barley says.
The redhead just looked at her confused, the cart went back to being nearly silent the only sounds where coming from the squeaking rats and the girl with the hairband who was crying quietly to herself.
"Thank you"The redhead said suddenly, Barley looked at her like a dear in headlight, Adam had to nudge her in the side.
"Sorry...it's no problem, I'm Barley by the way and this is Adam"Barley said, she looked at the redhead and began to notice how beautiful she was.
"I'm Coral and this is Mizzen"Coral says whilst pointing at the small boy a few feet from her.
"Lamina"Lamina finally spoke up.
"Treech"The other boy finally spoke up as well.
The cattle cart then fell silent again as nobody knew what to say, what could they say they would be trying to murder each other in a couple of days.
"Is he your brother?"Mizzen suddenly asked looking at Barley and Adam.
"Yeah, How'd you know that?"Barley asked.
"He's been holding your hand the whole time so I kinda guessed, also I have a big sister back in four"Mizzen tells her, Barely can see a sadness forming in his eyes as he thinks about his sister.
Barley looked down and saw that she was still holding Adam's hand. Suddenly Adam who had been resting his head on her shoulder popped up and looked over at Mizzen.
"You're from Four!"Adam asks excitedly. "Like with fish and the sea, can you swim?"
Coral laughs at Adam's excitement as a smile appears on Mizzen's face, he moves closer to Adam and they begin chatting about their homes to one another.
A smile appears on Barley's face and she smiles as the two boys, it's nice to see Adam have a small moment of happiness before it all goes to complete shit.
"It's not fair they have to take part in this"Coral speaks up.
Barley turns away from the boys and looks at Coral but before she can say anything Treech quickly cuts in.
"It's not fair any of us have to take part in this"Treech tells the others.
"True, but what can we expect from those capital soul suckers, they don't care about us all we are to them are animals. They needed someone to punish for their stupid war and here we are"Barley tells the boy.
A smirk forms on Treech's face. "Do all the people in your District share your same beautiful sentiment?"Treech questions sarcastically.
Barley laughs to herself. "Oh yeah back in Nine we all know where we stand in the world"Barley tells him.
"Sounds lovely"Treech quips.
"Is your place any better?"Barley asks.
"Back in seven?"Treech questions to which Barley nods. "Yeah it's full of trees and birds and the people are much more upbeat than Nine"
"Well isn't that lovely?"Barley asks with a smile on her face.
"Enough you two"Coral interrupts her anger briefly getting the better of her. "I'm not spending the rest of my time in this tiny hell hole listening to you squabble so be quiet"
Treech and Barley look at each other before turning away.
This was going to be a long couple of days.
