"Emily!" JJ called from the kitchen, urging her to hurry up.

"I'm ready, I'm ready!" Emily sighed, coming down the stairs. "I found it, you're welcome," she added, handing JJ the small stuffed elephant.

JJ smiled and kissed her. "Mia, put your shoes on. We're leaving," Emily shouted upstairs.

"I'm ready," Mia said, putting her hands on her hips. They both turned around and saw their four year old sitting by the door, shoes already on.

"I guess we're the ones getting late," JJ laughed, scooping her up from the floor. She handed her the elephant and slipped her shoes on.

Emily grabbed Mia's stuff and headed out to the car. JJ put Mia in the carseat and Emily started driving.

"You're going to be good for Ms. Tracy, right?" JJ asked skeptically, glancing at her in the rearview mirror.

"Yes!" Mia shouted, clapping her hands together. "When will you be back?"

"We don't know, baby. We'll call you tonight, okay?" Emily told her.

"Okay," Mia said softly. "Keep me upt-tated!"

"We'll keep you updated," JJ laughed, correcting her. Emily pulled the car over in front of the house and they both got out.

JJ got Mia out of the carseat and they walked to the door together. Mia knocked, and Ms. Tracy opened the door quickly.

"Hi guys!" she smiled brightly. "I've got some chocolate chip cookie ingredients that need baking, if anyone's free to help me today?" she said, looking down to Mia.

"I am!" she jumped up happily.

"Have fun. We'll call you soon," JJ said, bending down and kissing her head. Emily handed her stuff to Ms. Tracy and bent down next to Mia. "I love you," she whispered, kissing her cheek.

Mia went inside as Emily and JJ began to walk away. They waved to her all the way until they got to the car, feeling sad when they finally got in and drove away.

Emily and JJ had been fostering Mia for nearly a year now. They were hesitant about becoming foster parents because of how unstable their job was, but they had a friend that was a social worker who reached out and asked if they would be able to take Mia.

She said that Mia needed a family who understood trauma, the way JJ and Emily did from their jobs. They talked it over and agreed, thinking this was a good thing to do for a kid in need.

They'd truly loved Mia from the first night she was placed with them, and were able to make it work with their jobs. Mia stayed with Ms. Tracy three to four nights a week while Emily and JJ were out on cases. Tracy ran a daycare, and Emily and JJ really trusted her.

It was all going so perfectly at the moment. Too perfectly.

"Did Penelope tell you where we're going?" JJ asked, as Emily started driving to the BAU. "No," she responded. "All she said was that it's bad, but it's always bad."

They got to the BAU and joined everyone in the round table room. Penelope quickly briefed the case before they headed off to the jet. They were going to Denver, Colorado.

As JJ was walking out of the conference room, she felt her phone ring. She picked it up and saw that it was Rachel, Mia's social worker.

"Hey, is everything alright?" she asked, stepping into the hallway for privacy.

"I was hoping we could have a meeting to talk about Mia soon. Are you guys home?" Rachel asked.

JJ started to feel worried. "We were about to leave for a case, but we can stay back if this is important. What do you mean 'talk about Mia'? Is something going on?"
