JJ paced around the bedroom like she was in a prison.
"How much time is left?" she asked, for the tenth time. Emily checked her phone. "Three minutes and forty-three seconds," she responded. "That's twenty-three seconds less than the last time you asked."
"I just want to know already!" JJ exclaimed. It had been exactly two weeks since her appointment with Dr. Montgomery, which meant it was time to take the pregnancy test.
They had set it face down, and were waiting the proper amount of time before checking the results.
"Stop pacing. You're going to ruin the carpet," Emily smiled. She patted the side of the bed next to where she was sitting. "Come sit down."
JJ reluctantly took a seat and stared at the upside down pregnancy test. Emily rubbed her back. "Whatever it says, it's going to be okay. Don't be nervous."
JJ's knee was bouncing up and down as she waited. After what felt like an eternity later, the timer finally rang.
JJ's breath hitched. She looked at Emily, as if asking her what to do next. "Go on, look at it!" she urged, squeezing her shoulder.
Her hands were shaking as she carefully lifted the test. JJ felt like she couldn't breathe, not wanting to blink as her hands flipped it over.
Both of their hearts stopped when they saw it. Two clear red lines on the test.
"It's... positive," JJ said, starting to feel light headed. She looked at Emily's face and felt reassured. "It's positive!" she repeated.
Emily scooped JJ into a hug and kissed her lips. "It worked," she said breathlessly. JJ grinned and held onto her tight.
"I- I... thought-" she stumbled over her words and couldn't get out a full sentence. Emily just nodded, acknowledging her even though she didn't really understand what she meant.
"I feel like I'm going to vomit," JJ said, laughing through her teary eyes. "You're okay, it's just the nerves," Emily smiled. She kept her arm around JJ's waist.
JJ buried her face in Emily's shoulder, breathing slowly. A couple tears had ran down her cheeks. She was so excited and overwhelmed that she thought she might just explode. "I can't believe it," she murmured softly.
Emily held her in a hug. "We're having a baby," she whispered in her ear.

On Sunday morning, Emily woke up in bed alone. She rolled out of bed and walked downstairs, assuming JJ would be around.
She soon realized that JJ wasn't home, and figured that she must have gone on a run or to workout, like she usually did on the weekend.
She made a pot of coffee and got started making some breakfast. It was almost nine am when she heard the door open.
JJ came inside, her hair swinging in a high ponytail. She set her earbuds down on the counter. "It smells good," she said, looking over to see what Emily was making.
"It's almost done. Go shower and it'll be ready," Emily said, looking JJ up and down. "You're sweaty and gross."
JJ stuck her tongue out and went upstairs. Emily finished up the pancakes while JJ was showering.
In the middle of cooking, she heard JJ's phone ring with a text message. She grabbed it to make sure it wasn't from Hotch. She knew the password to JJ's phone, and JJ knew hers too. There had never been a reason to keep them a secret.
Emily was about to put it down because it didn't seem important, when a name caught her eye. The text said something about Mia.
She opened it, now curious who JJ was talking too. She was surprised to see that she was texting Mary. Why on earth was she doing that?
Emily scrolled a little through the texts, trying to see what was going on. She quickly realized why JJ had texted her. She was trying to set up another meet with Mia.
She was shocked and blindsided by this, because she really thought that JJ had started to move on. She didn't know what to do.
She smelt something weird in the air, and realized that the pancake she'd been cooking had burnt. She threw them in the trash, trying to get her head together.
Emily heard the shower turn off which meant JJ would be down any minute. She plated the good pancakes and set them on the table.
Soon JJ came down the stairs, dressed for the day. "Hey," she said, noticing the odd look on Emily's face. "You okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," Emily shook it off. She handed JJ a cup of coffee and they sat down together.
JJ took a sip. "This tastes funny," she said.
Emily smiled. "It's decaf. You're not supposed to have caffeine while you're pregnant." She slid the maple syrup over to JJ.
"I hate that rule. How am I supposed to go ten months without caffeine?" JJ sighed.
"I'm sure you'll manage," Emily responded. She took a couple bites of her breakfast, but she wasn't really hungry anymore. "Don't you think you should cut back on the workouts a little? You know, with the baby and everything?"
JJ stared down at the table. "I don't know," she shrugged. "People say that exercising won't hurt the baby."
Emily nodded. "Well maybe you should take it easy. I know you don't love that, but it'll be safer. Especially with field work too."
Both of them had decided that they weren't going to tell the team about JJ's pregnancy until it was closer to the end of the first trimester.
Emily had opposed this, saying it was better to tell them sooner because she really shouldn't be doing any field work at all.
JJ didn't take that very well and said that she was capable of doing her job while pregnant, so that's where they left it.
"I'm not going to be chasing down unsubs, if that's what you're saying," JJ laughed softly, but it sounded hollow and fake.
"I know," Emily said curtly. "I'm just saying take it easy, that's all."
JJ could tell that something weird was going on in their conversation, but she didn't know what it was. She felt like Emily was upset with her. She wished she would just say whatever it was that was making the meal so tense.
"I can stop working out. I don't have too, if that's what you think is best," JJ said quietly. She picked at her food but didn't take a bite.
"I didn't say that, did I? All I said was someone who's pregnant shouldn't be straining themselves too much," Emily scoffed. "You can do whatever the hell you want, JJ. It's not like what I say makes a difference."
JJ crossed her arms. She felt upset and confused. Emily was clearly bothered by something, why wouldn't she just say it?
"You're obviously mad at me about something. I thought you didn't want me working out because it could hurt the baby. What else am I supposed to think, you won't tell me what's going on!" JJ argued.
Emily sighed and got up from the table. "I need to go take a walk. I want to clear my head. We'll talk later, okay?"
JJ couldn't even respond before Emily grabbed her phone and left the house.
