It had been two months since JJ's episode after seeing Mia, and things had started to get better.
Emily gave JJ time to try and work on herself, and somehow she was improving on her own. They'd seen Mia once about a month ago, and JJ had been totally fine afterwards.
Something that helped her move on was focusing on the fact that it was getting closer to the baby coming. She would be out of the first trimester very soon, meaning they had to start getting ready.
Together they painted the second spare bedroom in their house. They didn't use Mia's room, because that just felt wrong. Her room stayed the way it was. Her clothes and toys had been packed up and sent with Mary, so it was really just the bed and decorations they had put up.
JJ had decided to paint the room light pink. They didn't know the gender yet, but in her head she was certain it was a girl. Emily tried to warn her against it in case she was wrong, but they figured if it was a boy he could deal with the wall color.
When Emily woke up Saturday morning she found JJ running on the treadmill in the garage. She tapped on the doorframe, getting her attention.
JJ turned it off and took a couple sips of water. Her face glistened with sweat.
"What are you doing up?" Emily asked, leaning against the wall. JJ usually slept in when she could.
"Couldn't sleep," she shrugged. They walked inside the house together, Emily making herself a cup of coffee.
"Are you sure you don't want to come with me today?" asked JJ. She was going to the pool with Spencer and Derek. They went all the time, but Emily hardly ever came along.
"As much as I'd love to, the extra six case files Hotch assigned me are waiting. You'll have fun without me," Emily told her, kissing her temple.
JJ poured herself a glass of orange juice. "Fine. Your loss. You'll have to miss Derek getting his ass kicked in basketball by Reid."
Emily laughed as JJ walked away to go shower. As she did, Emily noticed something. "Hey, come here," she said.
JJ turned around. "What?" she asked.
Emily pulled the knot out of JJ's shorts and pulled them down slightly so they sat lower on her hips. Since she was only running in the house, she was just wearing the shorts and a sports bra.
She ran her thumb over JJ's stomach. "You're showing already," she said.
JJ looked down. "Really?" she asked, slightly shocked.
Emily nodded. It was easier to tell because JJ's toned abs had softened. She pressed her lips over JJ's bellybutton. "You've got a tiny little bump," she murmured.
JJ smiled, her cheeks flushed. She felt her belly with her own hands. It wasn't much, but she could definitely feel something.
"How can that be the baby? She's still so small," JJ said, still staring down. "She's the size of a lemon. That's not that small," Emily told her. "Did you eat breakfast yet?"
She shook her head no. Emily kissed her cheek. "Go shower. I'll make you something to eat before you leave."
JJ went upstairs while Emily made her some toast with jelly. Being pregnant and all, she'd become very picky with what she would and wouldn't eat.
She came back down ten minutes later with her hair up in a bun. She sat down at the table and began to eat her breakfast.
"What do you think I should wear today?" JJ asked, sitting criss cross in the dining room chair.
"I don't know. You're going to a pool, so my suggestion would be a bathing suit," Emily shrugged. She knew exactly what JJ was saying, but she refused to indulge in her thoughts about how she looked "bad" in a bathing suit because she was pregnant.
"It'll be obvious that I'm pregnant. My stomach is huge now. You said it yourself," JJ argued.
Emily rubbed her face with her hands. "I did not say that. I said you had a tiny bump from the baby growing. Wear whatever you want JJ, it's really not noticeable."
"It is too. You just noticed it," JJ reminded her. "I only noticed it because I know that you're pregnant, and I know exactly what you look like. Unless the team has seen you naked as many times as I have, they won't suspect anything," Emily said, giving her a look.
JJ blushed and kicked her chair. "They might notice, you don't know. What if they ask me about it? Do I just lie?"
"Neither of them are going to ask you if you're pregnant, or why your stomach looks bigger. They're not idiots. Plus, I think they're too scared of you anyways," Emily told her. She watched the slow and careful bites JJ took of her toast.
"You know another solution to this problem is telling them the truth. You're basically 12 weeks. You'll have to do it sooner or later," said Emily.
"I guess you're right," JJ sighed. "But not today."
Emily laughed softly. "You will have to do it eventually. You should think about it." She kissed JJ's head. "You better go get ready."
JJ went into their room and rifled through her swimsuits to find the one she thought would show her belly the least.
She landed on a black one piece. She put it on and stared at herself in the mirror for a while.
Emily was right, it wasn't too noticeable.
She found herself thinking about why she didn't want it to be noticeable. She wasn't embarrassed about the baby. She wanted her. They had chosen to get pregnant. So why didn't she feel thrilled to tell the team that it had worked?
Emily walked into the room and saw her. "Quit staring at yourself. You look fine," she said, standing behind her. She placed her hands on JJ's hips.
"Maybe you're right. Maybe I should just tell them," JJ said softly. She continued to stare at herself.
"Do what ever you're comfortable with. But I don't know what you're worried about, Jen," Emily said. "They'll all be happy for you."
"I know," JJ nodded. She leaned her head back against Emily's shoulder.
Somehow, she'd got away with minimal field work for the last 3 months. It was easier than she had thought it would be. She always offered to interview the victims, or talk to the family. That's what she was good at anyways. When it came to tackling down an unsub, she left it to Hotch or Morgan.
"Do you know how much I love you?" Emily smiled, pressing a kiss into JJ's neck. JJ giggled softly. "Do you know how cheesy you are sometimes?" she responded.
"Yes, I do. I'm very self aware," Emily nodded. She spun JJ around and kissed her gently. "Now, to answer my question, I love you a very average amount."
JJ rolled her eyes. "You're not funny," she said, suppressing a smile.
"Did you expect something more? Did you want me to say I love you more than anything in the world? That I'd do anything to make you happy?" Emily asked, hovering her lips over JJ's as she spoke.
"You love me so much that you broke the nose of the unsub that elbowed me in the ribs while I was arresting him. You crawled around the floor of the house for hours when I lost my favorite necklace. You buy me mint chocolate chip ice cream every single time you go to the store even though it makes you want to vomit," JJ responded. "I know exactly how much you love me."
"I guess you've caught me," Emily sighed. "It seems that I do love you more than anything in the world."
"You're insane sometimes. I can't even believe we're married," JJ said, hanging onto Emily's neck and swinging side to side.
"We're married because you love me," Emily chuckled.
