The mini-break seemed to be taking a long time to pass for the group, who remained quiet for the duration of it. Yunho sat beside Mingi, twiddling his fingers in their clasped hands. Hwa and San occupied the sofa opposite, led lazily across each other. None of the group felt the need to fill the silence that enamoured them, purely because it wasn't uncomfortable. Just boring. Noticeably empty. Desperate to be filled by the sweet, bubbly, endearing voice they all missed.
"Who the fuck were the two stupid assholes running their mouths in the boys toilets just now?"
Every single head in the room turned, four heads in particular moving quicker than the rest.
Wooyoung stood, as bold as a person could be as he braved and returned the stares of approximately 40 students. As he didn't have the luxury of being able to identify the two individuals by their faces and only their voices, he skimmed the crowd for any particularly shocked and wary expressions. When he landed on a pair that exchanged a subtle shake of their head that screamed 'don't say a word' to each other, he smiled eerily and stepped toward them. The height advantage the two boys had on Wooyoung was as good as none existent, with the shorter's sinister stare up in to their eyes reducing them mentally to mouse size.
San watched on with bated breaths. Short and jagged. Every part of his brain was urging him to rush to Wooyoung's side, having already made the assumption that he must have overheard the two students saying derogatory things about him following the recent events. As if reading his mind, Hwa gripped his wound fist tightly, shaking his head. San nodded, albeit it tensely in return, promising to stay seated and let Wooyoung handle his own business.
"I'd have appreciated the sentiment from you both at first. You're right, sure. In fact, I'm certain every single person here, his friends included, would agree that it wasn't his place to share what happened to me the way that he did. Had you just stopped there, this wouldn't be happening right now. But you fucked up the second you started going in on him as a person. The abhorrently incorrect statements you made about his character, I'm not going to let slide. How. Fucking. Dare you. San is the most sincere, genuine, loyal and down-to-earth man I've ever had the blessing to meet. The shallow assumptions of him that fell out of your shit-spewing mouth are completely baseless. You could live a thousand lives and never come close to matching up to him, in any way, shape or form. His looks carry him? His wealth? His heart has carried him. His good heart has had him sailing through life with the respect of anyone he meets. What he did wasn't justified, but he acted with that very same heart at the time. I'll be the judge of his mistakes against me, not anyone else. Especially not you two. If either of you ever insult him like that again, I swear to God, I will rip your fucking carotid artery out with my bare teeth. You know I'm capable of it. Try me."
Wooyoung's insane tirade fell on every pair of ears in the room, as San watched on completely enthralled after hearing that it was him as the centre reason for Wooyoung's 1 v 2 feud, and not the shorter himself. He was less shocked to hear that someone had been called out for talking about him behind his back, and infinitely more shocked that Wooyoung of all people was chewing their asses out this crazily for it.
Wooyoung's neck veins were prominent as he fired out from all corners. Knowing he had fully garnered the attention of every single person in his surroundings, he continued, completely fearless.
"Ah. Great. Here I am again, in the middle of unbearably heavy drama for the third time in my first month at this school. I may as well say whatever I have to say just so all of this gossiping can stop. I'm working through a lot right now, and all I'd really like to do is get through my school days without any stress. In case I haven't made it clear just now, stress also comes from overhearing dickheads like these two dragging San through the dirt. What he's done has no correlation to who he is as a person, so I'd appreciate people treating him like a fucking human being."
The two boys on the receiving end of Wooyoung's bold call-out stood immobilised, eyes flickering to the side and meeting the judgy stares of the students, the deathly sharpened stares of San's friends, but not the eyes of the man himself.
San hadn't taken his eyes off of Wooyoung since the second the shorter said his first word when he came to the room.
Nina, an acquaintance of Wooyoung in one of his independent classes, stood and quietly made her way over to the now short of breath boy. She placed a hand on his arm before hooking around it, gently urging him to follow her out of the room to calm down in private. Following suit and picking up on what needed to happen, the silent students began to pick up basic conversation again in attempt to put Wooyoung at ease. Clutching at Nina's hand, Wooyoung turned and headed out.
"San? Dude, I swear we didn't mean anything by it. We were just bullshitting around."
San's eyes remained focused on the doorway Wooyoung had just left through, his mind in total disarray and reeling from the display of defense the shorter had put out for him. He hadn't realised, and still failed to realise, the two boys were standing before him and speaking to him.
Knowing that San would not be coming out of his Wooyoung-induced coma anytime soon, Hwa spoke up.
"I remember you guys. San helped both of you pass your Math exam when you were one bad grade away from repeating a year because you both flunked every lesson to get high behind the football pitch. He missed practice for two weeks straight and prepped effective tests to save your asses. Just for you to slate him like that behind his back? You spineless idiots. Get out of here before Mingi puts you both in to the fucking ground."
The pair didn't need to look at the fuming bundle of anger on their right hand side to know he was burning holes through them. And they certainly didn't need to be told twice. They scampered off, with Yunho commending his boyfriend for keeping somewhat calm with an appreciative kiss.
Hwa took a calming breath, his eyes closed as he willed himself to chill out. As an ultimate ride or die for San through thick and thin, he'd never heard such shitty comments made about someone who, out of all the people he knows, was the least deserving of them. Even with his recent wrongdoings taken in to consideration. "Sannie? You okay? Fuck those guys. The only reason they didn't have to repeat the last year was because of you. Wooyoung bodied those assholes, I'm so proud of him. Read them for filth. Let's just take it easy, yeah?"
Just as San failed to respond or acknowledge anything around him yet again, the bell went off, effectively snapping him out of his trance. He remained silent, simply standing and throwing his bag over his shoulder and making his way to second class as his friends hurried behind him.
Wooyoung's surprising words of unwavering support and care repeated over and over through his mind, filling his starved heart. It was exactly what San needed, but not what he felt he deserved. What Wooyoung had just done for him must have exhausted him, the notion heavily unsettling to San. All he could do was hope more than anything that Nina could offer any solace at all, and that Wooyoung hadn't exerted himself too much on the taller's behalf.
