When San awoke to an empty bed the following morning, his first response was sheer panic. He'd barely opened both eyes as he picked up the cold and bare vacancy of the shorter's body in his embrace, throwing the duvet to the floor as he stumbled out of bed.
Wooyoung never gets up without me. He waits, every time. Has he left? Did something happen in the night? Has he spoken to one of the boys this morning? Where the fuck is he? What have they said to him?
"WOOYOUNG. Where are you?" San's alone voice echoed as he made his way out of his bedroom through his spacious upstairs landing area, wishing more than anything at the moment that his house would shrink rapidly to help narrow down his search quicker.
"WOOYOUNG!!" He shrilled, desperation clear in his shouts. He felt a deep pitted sense of anguish in his stomach, similar to how he'd felt before he came home last night, and truthfully throughout it too even with Wooyoung by his side.
"Youngie? Please... where are you..."
"Sannie? Baby?"
Thank fucking God.
San spun in the far direction he'd picked up Wooyoung's voice, realising the shorter was in one of the guest bathrooms. He sprinted in, shocking the poor boy who had just stepped out of the shower.
"What are you doing in here? I was so scared you'd left. Fuck. You never get up before me." San panted, catching his breath as he doubled over with his hands on his knees.
Wooyoung looked on, more than concerned of the taller's state.
"I had a really good sleep last night, babe. I woke up early today, I guess? Earlier than we need to before getting sorted for school. I didn't want to use your en-suite because you were sleeping so peacefully, just didn't want to disturb you. That's all. There's no need to be scared, baby." He spoke softly in attempts to bring San back to level, stroking his arms.
San snatched Wooyoung in for a tight hug. He could tell his reaction had set off a few alarm bells in the shorter's head, and started to set about neutralising them.
"I'm sorry I startled you, sweetheart. I just... had a really fucking awful nightmare, that's all. Felt even worse when I woke up and you weren't there." He whispered, caressing the back of Wooyoung's soft freshly washed hair.
"Oh... my poor baby. I'm really sorry, Sannie. Now I feel bad. I really just wanted you to sleep a little longer because of your game tonight." Wooyoung murmured apologetically, genuinely guilty over the completely false narrative given to him by San.
Please don't fucking apologise, Wooyoung. I'm lying through my teeth. I don't deserve you. Nobody fucking does, at this point. San cursed at himself abhorrently in his brain.
"Don't feel bad, sweetheart. I'm just being dramatic, ignore me, hm?" San said as he squished the shorter's cheeks in a bid to put him at ease.
"Mmhmm, okie. Want to go make breakfast, now you're awake?" Wooyoung said through his smushed face still in San's grasp.
San kissed the pouted lips of Wooyoung, nodding, before letting go and motioning the shorter out of the room.

San realised on the way to school that, to this very moment, he'd never felt truly so unsettled. He couldn't raise any suspicion around Wooyoung with his friends, and he'd prayed they'd treat the shorter indifferently. Lord knows they'd done a good enough job pretending like everything was normal the whole week, anyway. At the same time, he detested the idea of his friends even being in the same space as Wooyoung, unable to fathom the notion that they'd dare act like everything was okay when it was so, very far from it.
When the two pulled up in the school car park, Wooyoung unfastened his belt and grabbed his bag ready to get out as usual, when he felt a small tug at his shirt from the side of him. He met San's face, with an unfamiliar expression lacing it.
He seems a little rattled. Is this how he usually is before a game? Poor Sannie. I'll spend the day being extra cautious of him.
"Come on, Sannie. The day will fly by, and soon enough you're gonna kick Riverview's asses. I'll be with you every minute today, and supporting you from the stands." Wooyoung spoke encouragingly, holding the hand that San had reached out to pull him back with.
Get a fucking hold of yourself, San. You haven't even got out of the car, yet. Today needs to go as smoothly as possible.
Giving himself a quick mental lashing, San allowed his face to fill with a much softer look as Wooyoung's soothing and homely eyes connected with his.
"You're right, baby. Just nerves ahead of tonight, but I'm glad I have you. Let's go, shall we?"
In all honesty, San had never found himself nervous whatsoever for any upcoming match, be it a friendly or a state game. His determination and passion in himself and his team had played a crucial part in their success. They never entered any game with the slightest notion that they'd come out of it as losers. But Wooyoung didn't need to know that. If the shorter wanted to believe that his apprehension was due to pre-game jitters, he would allow it.
Walking into school and to the student room prior to first lesson, Wooyoung clocked the slumped bodies of his friends that appeared to be as equally agitated as San. Thinking he had the situation pinned down to a total, Wooyoung brushed off the sour air, determined to lighten up the sullen moods of his beloved new group.
"Hi guys!" He smiled, giving each of them a nod and a gentle welcome squeeze. Each of the boys returned sweetly, with the shorter missing the way they had all held just that little bit tighter.
"Hi, Youngie! You okay? Where's Sannie?" Hwa queried, a little anxious that the taller hadn't walked in alongside him.
"He's just gone to the bathroom first, he should be here any minute. How is everybody feeling? I'm so excited to see you guys out on the field! I'm going to be so proud, I just know it." He gleefully beamed as he reached out into his bag.
"Thank you, Woo. We'll do our best, for sure." Mingi assured, hoping the shorter wouldn't think him rude for not being able to meet his level of energy. "We're more than ready to - what've you got there?"
Wooyoung pulled out 3 Tupperware boxes of his football cupcakes made the night before. After San's reaction, he had reconsidered handing them over, worried that the team may feel a little uneasy at his gesture, be it that they were a little emotionally pent up or just that they'd think him weird. But he vowed to do it anyway, shaking off his pesky doubts, hoping they'd all see his good intentions.
