Choi San grew up in the small town of Busan. He spent most of his days helping his mother in her bakery while his dad was out trading with the local farmers, merchants, and traders. His sister, Haneul, didn't do much. She mostly just baked pastries that were ordered or she spent time up in her room by herself.
One day as San was heading back to the shop after delivering pastries to one of the locals, he noticed a group of older boys surrounded a boy about his age(6 at this time). They were pushing him and calling him names. San knew he couldn't just stand back and let it happen, his mother had taught him better than that. He quickly ran over and grabbed the boy's arm, pulling him behind him. "What are you doing.." The boy whispered to him. "It's ok, i've got this" San whispered back confidently. "Who the hell do you think you are?" One of the older boys said. "This kids out of his mind" Another one said, snickering a little. "Leave him alone. He's not doing anything" San said, trying his best to stand his ground. "This little rat thinks he can mouth off to us without us teaching him a lesson and you're gonna tell us to leave him alone" The middle boy said. "Dude I don't think the kid's gonna leave" One of them said, elbowing the middle one. "Looks like we'll have to do this the hard way" He said, cracking his knuckles. San tried his best to fight them off but it was no use. He was too weak and just got beat down anyways.
Once the bullies had finished they left, snickering and laughing. The little boy ran over and crouched next to San who was on the ground. "God, look what you've done to yourself, idiot" He said, checking San's arms and face. "I'll be ok. When I get bigger I'm gonna have muscles and be unmovable." "Well Mr. Unmovable, you need to be bandaged" "Please, just call me San" San said, scoffing a little before laying his head down. "Well ok San. My name's Wooyoung" He said, standing up and offering his hand to San. San smiled and grabbed his hand, letting Woo help him up. "I'm guessing you're gonna doctor me now" San said, putting his arm over Woo's shoulder. "Nah. But I will take you to your mom at least. Where do I need to take you?" "There's a bakery in town. It's my mom's" "Mkay, let's go"
Woo did his best and tried to get San to the bakery as quick as possible, giving him to his mom when he finally arrived. San's mom quickly rushed to the door, checking on San as soon as she saw him. "What happened?!" She said quickly, picking San up and setting him on a chair. "A group of boys beat him up...He was just trying to help me.." Woo said, rubbing the back of his head. "Thank you for bringing him" She said before running to grab some bandages. Woo came over and sat beside San, gently grabbing his hand. "Thank you. You know, for getting beat to a pulp for me" San laughed a little "I do it a million more times" He replied with a big smile on his face. From then on, him and Woo were the closest of friends. Woo would come see him at the bakery every afternoon and would spend his allowance on pastries just so he could contribute to Mama Choi's bakery.
One day, Wooyoung didn't show up to the bakery like he usually did. San got a little worried so he grabbed a pastry to take it to Woo. He'd been to Woo's grandfather's farm before but he didn't go often. He walked to the farm, spotting Woo raking a field. "C'mon, keep at it boy" His grandpa yelled. "Ugh..I'm tired of this grandpa!" He yelled back. "Well that's too damn bad! This field needs to be raked and I sure as hell can't do it" His grandpa said before going inside. Woo sighed and leaned against the rake, wiping his forehead. San hopped the fence and ran over to Woo. His expression lit up as soon as he saw San. "Wha- Hi. Why are you here?" He said, wiping the dirt from his face. "I came to bring you your pastry. Mama would want you to have it" "Did you really come all the way out here for that?" "Well...I wanted to see you too I suppose.." Woo giggled and nudged San. "Look I can't talk for long. My grandpa will get mad if he sees me chatting instead of raking the field. I'll see you tomorrow though" He said, taking the pastry. San hugged him before running to hop back over the fence "Bye Woo!" "Bye Sannie!!" They yelled to each other.
Jung Wooyoung was always a bit of a silly boy. He'd lived with and worked for his grandpa and he'd been friends with San for about 3 years now. They were practically inseparable. They'd hang out nonstop. When Woo was busy with work, San would come and hang out at the farm, waiting for him to be done. One day while San was waiting, he noticed a piece of paper that was in a tree hole. He walked over, getting it out and unraveling it. It was a map...a treasure map? What was that doing here? He ran over to Woo and handed it to him. "Look what I found Woo" "What is it?" "Seems to be a treasure map. How about we go look for it" "Sannie..I've got to finish work. You know how mad my grandpa will be" "Eh, C'mon i'll take the blame" "Ugh..fine, but you owe me if he's on my ass" Woo said, grabbing San's hand and letting himself be dragged out of the field. "So where exactly are we going Sannie?" He said, holding onto the back of San's shirt as they walked. "Hm, it seems to be a little ways outside of the city. It shouldn't be too hard to get to"
They walked around for about an hour, finally getting closer to their destination when San bumped into someone, causing Woo to bump into him. "Mhp- Sannie" He muttered, gripping onto his shirt tighter. San looked up to see that he'd bumped into a boy about their age. "Found my map I see" He said with a big grin on his face. Woo peered over San's shoulder. He'd recognized that voice. "Joongie! Hi" "Oh, Hi Woo. Who's your friend?" Hongjoong replied. "His name is San. He's my best friend. We hang out all the time and he's really good at finding his way around. I think he'd be a good addition to the crew" "Hmm, I'm sure we can make arrangements Woo" Hongjoong said before putting his hand out. "My name's Hongjoong. How old are you San?" "I'm 9.." He muttered "Oh cool, I'm a year older than you. I'm sure we'll get along fine" Wooyoung hugged onto San's arm. He could tell he was a little shaken up but he didn't know if it's because he was suspicious of Hong or because he just wanted to be left alone to find the treasure. San looked over at Woo and smiled softly, realizing he was just trying to comfort him. "Do you want to come with us?" San asked. "Sure. I forgot what I buried anyways" Hong followed behind them as they continued to walk towards the location of the treasure. San would warm up to him eventually....Woo was sure of it.
