"I can cross 'participating in a high speed chase' off my bucket list."
——"It's Rafe. He's here."
My eyes grow wide. "Where?"
"He's upstairs right now on the phone with Dad. Something about the cross. I'll tell you more when we get out of here."
"I'll distract him," Ryan offers.
"Thank you," I say to him gratefully.
"You guys head for the sun room. I'll go knock at the front as a diversion," he plans. I nod in agreement.
Ryan sneaks down the hall with Sarah and I following close behind him. The dark-haired boy darts for the front door, closes it softly behind him and then knocks a few seconds later. Sarah and I wait with our backs pressed against the wall, waiting to make sure that Rafe is distracted before we make a run for it.
Footsteps thud on the spiral staircase as Rafe descends it. He opens the door and Ryan begins to speak, acting dumb.
"Ryan," Rafe greets him flatly.
"Hey, Rafe. Long time, no see."
As their conversation continues, Sarah peeks around the corner and then gives her signal. We creep across the foyer and make it safely to the other side of the hall. With both of our bags slung over our shoulders, we make our way into the sun room and out the glass doors at the back of the house. I'll have to thank Ryan later, somehow.
Once we cross through our neighbors lawn, we hug the hedges on the other side and eventually we reach the main road. Sarah whips out her phone from her pocket and texts frantically. "We'll meet up with Kie at the Wreck. She thinks that her parents will let her out of their sight for long enough to meet us."
"Wait, Sarah," I start. "You know the boat that Kie and I had?"
"Yeah, what about it?" she asks, starting to change direction towards the Carrera's humble restaurant.
"It was Rafe's."
She stops suddenly in her tracks. "I'm sorry. Rafe's?"
"When Kiara and I were held up at Singh's place we were summoned downstairs to meet with him and Rafe was there. Singh knew that he had something to do with the cross and knew that one of us would have the diary," I ramble on. "He helped us all escape and when he brought Kie and I to his boat, we pushed him off into the harbor and drove away with it. When you saw me below deck "cleaning" I was actually trying to hide his belongings."
"Okay, but, Stella, why wouldn't you just tell us?" she asks me.
"I...I—after everything he's done, I just didn't want JJ to freak out over nothing. You know how he can be," I reply.
