"Wait, you guys know each other?" Lexis asks, confusion etched onto his face.
"More than know each other," I growl, glaring at a guilty-looking Flynn. "He's my goddamn cousin."
"Cousins?" Lexis repeats, head turning from Flynn to me, eyebrows furrowed. "Someone explain."
I roll my eyes. "What's there to explain, you tasteless piece of gum? Him and me," I point to Flynn then myself. "Are cousins. My Mum and his Dad are sister and brother."
"Wait, can we just go back a second. Faye, why are you here?" Flynn asks looking confused before a knowing look crosses his face and his eyes widen. "Crazy, bitchy, smart-mouthed- holy fuck! Faye, you're the one that witnessed the murder?" Flynn shrieks.
"Yeah, that's me. I'm also stuck with this huge piece of shit, so if you would so kindly explain what the fuck you're doing here and find a way to get me out, that would be delightful," I say in an overly sweet voice.
Flynn sighs and nods. "Okay, but can I at least come inside first?" Lexis opens the door wider and waits for Flynn to enter before shutting it behind him and locking the door.
"What did you say about boss?" Lexis asks, leading us to the living room and taking a seat on one of the black sofas.
"Oh, he's running late. Said he has to deal with something and that he'll be about fifteen minutes," Flynn replies, sitting down next to him.
"Enough with this boss-man-dude-guy. Flynn, explain," I demand, raising an eyebrow pointedly.
"So you know how I supposedly 'ran away' according to my parents?" He asks and I nod, remembering the moment his parents told me he just up and left. I also remember feeling an anger so intense I wanted to bash his head into seven doors when I heard he had just gone without me. "That's not the truth."
"What do you mean it's not the truth?"
"My parents were arguing-- no surprise there-- and when I went down to stop them, I saw my Dad slap my Mum across the face and that was it. I stormed in and punched him across the face. With a big red mark across my Mum's face, she yelled at me to stop and actually slapped me for defending her. I told them I couldn't live like this anymore, that I couldn't live with them, and you want to know what they said?" He laughs humourlessly, "They told me to go. To get out and leave because all I am is extra stress. Apparently, I'm the reason they argue in the first place."
I close my eyes and let out a deep breath, imagining Flynn getting told that the reason his parents fight and argue is all because of him. "Fucking hell Flynn. But that still doesn't explain why you didn't tell me or how you ended up working for that guy."
"I'm getting there," he says, taking in a deep breath, clenching and unclenching his fist. "So, I left. Obviously I didn't have anywhere to go. I had only just met Lexis, but we were good friends. He introduced me to his boss and his boss offered me a place to live so long as I completed a few jobs."
"Why didn't you take me with you?" I ask quietly.
Flynn and I both had messed up home lives. Our parents argued day and night but would pretend they were happy couples out in public. The only time we'd escape their constant arguing was when we both met up at our Grandparent's cabin. It used to be our safe house, but it became mine when he ran away.
For a while all I felt toward Flynn was contempt. We both had a deal that once we had enough money, we would leave our shitty lives and live a better one. We were both saving up and looking for the cheapest places. Thinking about being free and away from our parents was the only thing that got us going. Obviously, when he left, all of that went down the drain.
He was the only person I could talk to, the only person that understood and it hurt like hell when I found out he managed to escape, but without me.
"I wanted to Faye, I really did, but I couldn't get you involved in all this shit. I wanted to go to the cabin numerous times, but I didn't have the guts because I was scared you would hate me and wouldn't want to see me."
"I could never hate you," I mumble, suddenly finding my hands very interesting to look at, "It was more disappointment. We had promises and hopes, and when you left, you shattered and broke every one of them."
Flynn turns his gaze down to the floor and lowers his head. "I didn't want to disappoint you, Faye. I really am sorry."
Sighing, I turn to him and pull him into my arms, hugging him. "I'm not going to say it's okay, because it really isn't. But now that I know the full story, I guess I can forgive your annoying ass," I say, pulling back and smiling, trying to lighten the mood. Flynn cracks a little smile.
The doorbell goes off and Lexis gets up. "This was sweet and all, but boss is here. Flynn, tell your cousin to behave while I get the door."
Flynn turns to me with a serious look on his face. "This guy doesn't mess about, Faye. Please don't do anything to put yourself in danger. I don't know how, but I'll get you out of this mess. I promise."
"I won't say anything, but that's only if he doesn't do anything to make me say something. As for the promise, you break this one and I'll break you," I warn, teasingly narrowing my eyes.
He nods, a look of dead seriousness on his face, "The other promises aren't broken, Faye. Maybe you don't believe me, but we're going to leave and get the life we've always wanted."
Flynn stands up and shoves his hands into his pockets, and I stand up as well. He gives me one last side glance before Lexis enters the room, a tall, young man standing beside him.
Of course, the guy looks like someone out of a freaking magazine. He's wearing a stripy dark grey button up shirt with fitted black trousers and black dress shoes. His hair is flicked back in a look that screams 'it looks effortless which is exactly why it isn't' and light stubble covers his face.
Not one sign of old age can be seen as he flashes me a smile, white teeth on full show-- if it was a cartoon, there surely would've been a sparkle glinting off them. He steps closer to me and holds out his hand.
"You must be Faye," he says, voice deep and smooth. "I'm Damon, Lexis and Flynn's boss. Pleasure to meet you."
I look down at his hand and shake it only when I receive a slight nudge from Flynn beside me, flashing a smile of my own. "Yes, I'm sure it is."
