Once we're parked in front of Lexis' house, he switches the car off and we sit in silence, me staring out the window and him staring at me.

Sighing, Lexis digs into his pocket and brings out his phone, calling someone. "Can you come over? Yeah- as quick as you can please. Alright, okay, bye."

"Unlock the door," I order, holding on the door handle and pulling it open when Lexis does what I say.

I get out of the car and walk up to the house, Lexis' footsteps close behind me. He opens the door and I walk in, planning to head straight upstairs.

But Lexis grabs onto my wrist before I can reach the stairs, tugging me back. "Faye, you're gonna have to talk sooner or later. Are you angry at me? Is that it? Bloody hell Faye, talk to me!"

"You don't fucking get it do you?" I growl, snatching my hand out of his grip, turning around to face him. "Death isn't a joke Lexis. You can't just kill people and get away with it!"

"In case you didn't see, I wasn't the one that killed that guy, boss did!"

"You stood there and let him! That's just as bad as committing the act yourself. I may not be an entirely innocent person Lexis, but at least I hadn't ever taken a person's goddamn life!"

"We've been over this," He sighs, shaking his head. "I'm a murderer, Faye. It's what I am."

"You're a fucking disgusting human being."

"What do you want from me?" He yells, clenching his hands into fists. "Do you want me to stop killing people, is that it?"

"I want you to fucking let me go you sick little shit!"

Lexis physically deflates, taking a step back and closing his eyes. "I can't," he whispers.

I laugh humourlessly. "Of course you can't."

Shaking my head, I walk away heading upstairs to 'my room'. I slam the door shut knowing any attempt to keep anyone out is futile because it locks from the outside.

Leaning against the wall, I slide down to the floor and bring my knees up to my chest, placing my head between them and letting my emotions free. Tears flow down my face, one after the other, but I make no noise.

...

A little while later, I've managed to stop crying and the tear tracks have dried up on my face making it uncomfortable, yet I don't get up from my position in front of the door.

The door opens downstairs and the unmissable voice of a worried Flynn asks, "Where is she? Is she okay? What happened?"

Lexis explains everything that happened and then there's footsteps coming up the stairs and standing outside 'my' door.

"Faye?" Flynn asks, knocking softly. "Can I come in?"

I get up from my place on the floor so as not to get shoved when Flynn comes in and sigh, "You'll do so anyways so be be my guest."

The door opens almost hesitantly and Flynn comes in, arms open wide the second he sees me. Like always, I all but jump into his embrace and clutch onto his top as his arms wrap around me tightly.

"You okay?" He asks quietly, squeezing me tighter but not letting go, and I'm glad for that, because I know if he did, I'd only end up crying again-- and I hate crying; crying is for the weak, as I've always been told.

"Depends on your definition of okay," I say, my voice all cracked and choked up and if Flynn didn't realise I'd been crying by the way my face looked, he certainly knew now.

"I asked Lexis- well more like demanded. I demanded that Lexis let me take you out and he said yes!" Flynn pulls back, keeping his arms around me and smiles. "We're gonna go to the cabin- if that's okay with you."

I nod furiously, unwillingly letting Flynn go. "Thank you, Flynn."

"Don't thank me yet cuz," he says, bopping my nose. "I still have to make it up to you for leaving."

I nod. "Let's go."

...

We walk through the front gate-- it was still open, the bolts discarded in the same place I saw them last time, bolt cutter next to them-- and I let out a deep breath I didn't know I was holding in.

"God it's so fucking good to be back here," Flynn says, smiling brightly. "I've missed this place."

I laugh, nodding. "You should've visited even when you left. It was left to the both of us, you know."

"I know." He shrugs. "It just didn't feel right."

We walk up to the front door and I type the code into the keypad, pushing the door open when it beeps green.

It's eerily quiet when Flynn and I first step inside, but soon, any tension or negative feeling drifts away and I collapse onto the soft, beige sofa further into the room.

"C'mon on then Flynnie. You just gonna stand there?" I tease, Flynn sticking his tongue out at me and me retuning the gesture.

"It looks exactly the same," he murmurs, taking a seat on the opposite couch. He sighs contentedly, stretching his legs to take up the whole of the sofa.

The cabin itself was small, so the rooms weren't big, but they were perfect enough for the two of us. Our grandma had the best style sense and made the most out of the small space, a homey feeling in every corner of the building.

"I wish I could just stay here forever and never have to worry about anything," I say, looking up at the ceiling and tapping my fingers against each other.

"Yeah," Flynn agrees. "That would be nice."

"What happened to us, Flynn?"

Flynn shrugs. "Life, I guess."

"Things would've been different if granny and grandpa were still here," I say, closing my eyes so as not to tear up. "They would've helped us through all this shit."

"You know what grandpa told me before he died?" Flynn asks and I hum, shaking my head. "He said, 'Flynnie boy, you and Faye are my only grandkids and I love you both so much. I know it doesn't seem like it, but your parents love you. Me and granny won't be around for much longer, I'm sure you know that, so I need to ask something of you. I need you to look after Faye; protect her. It's a mans job to look after the women, even though we're idiots and the women are the ones that end up looking after us.'"

I laugh, choking up a little as I hold back tears. "That sounds exactly like something he would've said."

Flynn nods, looking at me and frowning. "He trusted me to look after you, and I failed him. I'm sorry, Faye." He looks up to the ceiling. "And I'm sorry, Grandpa," he whispers.

"You haven't failed him yet," I say. "Grandpa loved to give second chances, you know that. He believed even the most sinful of people deserved second chances."

"Even if those people don't believe they deserve a second chance," we say together, "Just like he always said."

And then in the silence, I think about Lexis. About how murdering people is definitely a sin and how everyone deserves a second chance. Does he believe he deserves a second chance?
