 "Looks like trouble up ahead, sir," the driver said.

Selby and I were rubbernecking to try and see what was going on.

"I'll see if I can drive around," he said.

"No," I said. "Pull off. It's just happened. Selby. Call 911. Get some help out here."

I jumped out of the car and headed toward the tangle of metal and tree limbs. The motor was still running. The window was opened on the driver's side of the wreckage. I reached inside and turned off the switch.

The elderly man was groggy. He was moaning. I saw blood. Lots and lots of it.

Ripping off my shirt. I made a wad and immediately started applying pressure on the wound.

"Sir," I said. "Sir! We need to get you out of here. I smell smoke!"
