Penn San Pierre was distracted. She'd just gotten fired for something that was totally another's fault.

I am an easy scapegoat, she brooded.

She stepped off the curb, her eyes bleary with tears. She hated to appear weak. She bowed her head and let her bangs fall loosely in front of her face.

Something she would ordinarily never do. Being deaf, she had to make sure she was aware of her surroundings. It was her number one rule. She heeded it like her life depended on it.

And it did.

But today, her mind was not on rules.
