But today, she had to be on her way.
She glanced at her watch.
Shoot.
She was sure to miss the subway.
She took off running and miraculously just made it.
Her cubicle was as bland, as morose, and as depressing as ever. She sat down and started her shift. Three calls in she had been cursed out by someone using such vile words that it brought tears to her eyes. Not only that, Mel Brunsworthy got chewed out by the shift supervisor and blamed the error on the office scapegoat.
Namely, her.
She didn't know what infuriated her more, being unjustly accused of something she didn't do or keeping her mouth shut to avoid confrontation.
Cowardice was a heavy burden to bear, she decided.
Now, the whole office thought her a major screw up. And what if it cost her her job?
No, she mused. They'd have the proof in their records.
But she had called in sick the next day after it had all went down. Not because she wanted more time off, but because she'd come down with a horrible virus that made her wish she lived in a hermetically sealed bubble.
But that was no way to live.
No, she decided. She'd tell Mel off. And today was as good a day as ever.
Right after she got through with this last report.
