"What do you think happened to her?" Buddy asked Charlie.
"Oh," said Charlie, "I don't know. He probably stuck her in one of those sheds on Obidiah's place."
Charlie wore about the most worried expression on her face Buddy had ever seen.
"You scared they'll find her?" Buddy asked. "After all, the Old Man owned all that property."
"Nah," she said. "That ain't it."
"What's the matter, then? You think Vera or the Old Man will come back and haint you?"
"That ain't it, neither," Charlie said.
"What is it?" Buddy asked.
"Maude says I gotta wear a dress to the funeral."
Buddy felt a twinge of sympathy for his friend, but he had to laugh.
Charlie socked Buddy hard -- right in the stomach.
"Ow! Charlotte! Wha'dja do that for?" Buddy whined. "That hurt!"
"I meant for it to," Charlie said. "Now, come on. I heard Geraldine say she was gonna dress you in a suit."
