The special night arrived. She was nervous, excited, half-sick, and ecstatic all at the same time. The dress fit her like a glove. It was made for her.

She hated the fact that she couldn't afford new shoes to match, but she told herself that the dress more than made up for the slightly worn pumps that covered the soles of her feet.

Cinderella needed her slippers back, after all.

She arrived at the party exactly on time. Mel was waiting outside. She could tell by the look on his face that he didn't know whether to believe it was her or a doppelganger.

"Wow," Mel said. "You look gorgeous."

That was the beginning of a lovely dream. Just as she'd thought, all eyes were on her when she entered the room.

It was a heady feeling. A gloriously intoxicating experience.

And so short-lived.
