NANCY AWOKE THE next morning to texts from both izzy and robin. she sighed to herself, opening izzy's texts first. she didn't expect to see two paragraphs sent by izzy in reply to her 'hi' text last night. they read:

i'm really sorry for breaking up with
you a month ago. i've been having a hard time mentally, and you weren't really helping. i needed some time to myself for a bit, but i really miss you. i really do think we can make this work, nance. you don't need anybody but me. it's us against the world.

i know you better than anyone else. you want
this to work. you want to live a happy life with me. you can't exactly do that if i'm gone, can
you? we can make this work, nancy. i need
you, nancy. i need us. you can't just do this to
me. i know you love me, you can't just stop.
if you love me, you'll take me back. i love you

nancy's heart was racing by the end of the message. she wished she was still dreaming, but at the same time, she was glad she wasn't. izzy wanted her back, just like she had wanted.

so why wasn't she fully happy.

she sat in bed for half an hour, trying to figure out what to say. she was still thinking when her phone rang, pulling her out of her thoughts. as she glanced to the top of the screen to see who was calling, she saw izzy's name, and her blood ran cold.

"hello?" nancy answered, putting the phone up to her ear.

"i missed hearing your voice," izzy replied on the other line. nancy didn't reply- she didn't know what to say back to that. "did you get my text?"

"yeah, i did"

"you didn't reply to it" izzy commented in an irritated tone.

"i was typing when you called, but i didn't know what to say"

"you could tell me you'll be my girlfriend again"

"i don't know. look," nancy dropped her voice to a whisper. "summer doesn't-"

"nancy, stop listening to summer. she always tries to get you to break up with me. she overreacts to everything and gets mad when you don't do what she says. she's not a good friend to you"

"i don't know..." nancy trailed off, thinking. "that doesn't sound like her"

"yes it does. she's controlling and a liar. she takes any little thing and blows it out of proportion"

"yeah, i guess you're right"

"please, nancy. i miss you. i promise you we can make this work. we're made for each other. i promise i'm going to be better for you. i love you"

nancy sighed, debating. she could take izzy back, and end everything with robin. she could spend the rest of her life with izzy- someone who knew her at her worst and her best. or she could throw it all away, and stay with robin until robin moved on.

"okay, i'll be your girlfriend again," nancy whispered, "but i need to keep it a secret for a while. so no coming over for now"

"i like it better when you come here anyways," izzy said plainly, "i'll call you later, 'kay?"

"okay"

"love you, nance"

"love you too" nancy replied, but izzy didn't hear it. she had already hung up before nancy got the first syllable out of her mouth.

-

robin had been texting nancy all day, and she felt bad for how slowly she was replying. she figured it was best to end it now, before it progressed any further.

she tried to force herself to call robin, but her brain wouldn't let her hit the button. her finger hovered above the screen, millimeters away from it, but she couldn't close the gap.

she tried to type a text next, but she was at a loss for words. what would she even say to her? 'hey, i know we just fucked yesterday, but i got back with my ex'? how stupid did that sound?

she set her phone down in frustration, running a hand through the roots of her hair. she knew she needed to tell robin, but she didn't want to. she felt bad doing that to her.

after weighing the options, she threw on a new outfit. since it was rainy and gloomy outside, she chose sweatpants with a matching hoodie. she threw on a pair of sneakers and grabbed her keys. she swirved and jumped to avoid many puddles, but she made it to her car without getting soaking wet.

she was anxious the entire time, tapping the steering wheel with her fingers as she drove. it was a habit she had for whenever she was nervous, as it kept her mind busy on moving her hands instead of whatever was making her skin crawl.

she tried to think of what she'd say, but she couldn't figure out how to word it without sounding like an asshole. eventually, she just had to settle on the fact that there was no way. she is an asshole.

she parked in a spot outside the hotel, taking a minute to collect herself in her car first. she took a few deep breaths, shaking her hands to try to calm herself down.

as she walked into the hotel, every step she took practically made her anxiety increase. she walked down the long hallway once again, watching as the numbers on the doors grew.

she could feel that she reached robin's room before she saw the number on her door. she turned to face the door, feeling tiny beside it. she felt like it towered over her, threatening her to not knock on the door.

she thought about it- running away. going home and never saying anything. but she knew she owed it to robin. robin deserved to know what was going on, even if it made her hate nancy forever.

she knocked on the door, swaying back and forth on her feet as she waited. the door opening made her jump, and she locked eyes with the blue-eyed girl on the other side.
