Having finished with her hair and make-up, Jennie put on her shoes and took one last look at herself in the mirror. Today she chose a light grey dress with a wide black belt at the waist and black lacquered shoes that perfectly emphasised her slender legs. With a satisfied wink at her reflection, Jennie walked out of the bathroom.
"How was it?" Jennie asked loudly, while at the same time spreading the nonexistent creases on her waist. Receiving no reply, Jennie looked up. "Lisa ?" she called a little more quietly, heading towards the bed.
The brunette's heart clenched at the sight of the blonde sleeping peacefully and her son still lying on the girl's chest. Manobal's chin rested on the baby's top and her arms hugged him tightly. A gentle smile appeared on Jennie 's lips . If one were to see her now from the outside, one would think that smile was a sign of bliss. The girl couldn't bring herself to move at this point. She just stood next to the bed and looked at the sleeping people.
Kim scrutinised the nanny. Her golden curls were scattered across the pillow, her pale pink lips were slightly ajar. When Sam moved and brushed her nose with his hair, causing Lisa to wrinkle her nose in amusement, Jennie laughed softly. Her gaze fell on the darkened bruise that was already clearly visible on Manobal's forehead.
Jennie 's stomach clenched unpleasantly, guilt overwhelming her. Of course she had wanted to protect her son from a possible threat, anyone in her place would have done the same, but the realisation of it didn't lessen the guilt. The girl reached out and touched her fingertips to the scarlet skin. Under her fingers she could feel fluid. The bruised area was swollen. The guilt was building. The sudden realisation of what she was doing and that it could hurt Lisa made Jennie pull her hand away quickly. When she pulled her hand away, she saw that two emerald eyes were watching her intently.
"Oh," Kim said in a whisper for some reason. " Forgive me, did I hurt you?"
Lisa smiled lazily and, trying not to wake Sam, shook her head.
"Maybe I should bring some ice?" the brunette wanted to do at least something for the girl.
Lisa tried to frown, but immediately winced in pain.
"Oh," she croaked. "Only if it's for my head," the girl added, smiling at a joke that only she understood. " Of course, thank you.
"Okay," Jennie answered and quickly turned around and headed out of the room, but just before the threshold she was stopped by Manobal's weak voice.
"Are we... me and the boy," the girl seemed embarrassed by something. "Were we asleep all this time? Have you already returned from your date?"
Grinning, the brunette returned to the bed and patted the blonde's arm.
"No, Lisa," she whispered. " I haven't left yet."
"Oh, right," the girl agreed and yawned widely. " Wow. It seems that the blow really seriously knocked me out."
At these words, Jennie turned pale. In an attempt to calm the girl, Lisa stood up, holding Sam with one hand, and grabbed the brunette's wrist. Without thinking, she intertwined their fingers.
" Hey, hey, I didn't mean anything by saying that."
Jennie nodded and unconsciously squeezed the blonde's fingers in response.
"Still, I'll go and get you ice," a second later Kim got out of bed and left the room.
She barely managed to walk a few steps before the doorbell echoed throughout the house, catching the girls by surprise.
"Oh," Jennie said quietly. " Apparently, this is my gentleman for today."
"Yes," Lisa agreed. Carefully moving Sam onto the bed next to her, the girl rose from the bed. "I'll go get the ice myself," she said with a smile.
