" What?" Jennie 's eyebrows went up. "What did you just say again?!"
"Uh, do you have any free time?" asked Jisoo.
"Not much," growled Jennie . She gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned white. " I'm just on my way to the office. Wait for me there."
"What?" exclaimed Jisoo, looking around quickly. The girl had been sitting at the desk in her office for some time now, sorting through some paperwork. She kept her cell phone clamped between her ear and shoulder. "Jennie , I can't. I have to work too, you know."
That wasn't entirely true. Yes, the girl did have to work, but she could easily take a break and meet up with a friend. Her team could work without her supervision for a while. Like Jennie , Jisoo owned her own company. She was in charge of her own time. Still, she didn't want to listen to her friend's complaints. And knowing Jennie , that's exactly what would happen. Jisoo knew the girl better than she knew herself. Kim wouldn't soften any excuse Jisoo could come up with.
"Is that all you can come up with for an excuse right now?" Jennie said as she pulled into the garage. "Frankly, Jisoo, I'm disappointed. You could have come up with something more substantial."
"You're right," the brunette agreed, knowing it was useless to argue or deny anything. "I just haven't had time to be creative."
"Are you going to keep talking nonsense, or do you want to come over in an hour?" Jennie asked. Though the tone of her voice made it clear that Jisoo had no choice.
"Well, let's think about it," Jisoo began, but the irritated hissing in the phone cut off her last urge to argue. Even over the phone, she could hear Kim's anger boiling over. And it could hardly be blamed on Jennie . She deserved an explanation. Jisoo just hoped that the phone call would be enough and she wouldn't have to face her angry friend in person. But Jisoo also knew very well that Jennie wasn't the type to settle such matters over the phone. She always liked to settle things in person. Her looks, her clothes, her facial expressions, her proper speech, her icy stare, her authority - everything worked for her in such moments. She was a businesswoman in every sense of the word.
"Kim Jisoo," Jennie said through clenched teeth. Her voice was an octave lower, almost a hiss. "Don't test my patience. I don't know exactly what you've done, but I already have a feeling I'm not going to be happy about it. So if you don't come to my office within the hour, you're going to regret it very much."
"Yeah? What are you going to do, Jennie ?" snorted Chu. "Not invite me to Christmas dinner this year?"
"Much worse," Jennie said, closing her car and heading for the elevator. "I don't think it's in your best interest for me to say this over the phone."
"Shit," Jisoo whispered, biting her lower lip and tapping her fingernails on the countertop.
Older Kim doubted the brunette would do anything really terrible, but she shouldn't underestimate Jennie . She would at least be outraged when she found out the truth. Jennie liked to analyze everything, to dissect it down to the smallest fragments. She wouldn't be satisfied with a simple explanation. Jen was used to looking into things to the end. And that wasn't playing into Jisoo's hands right now.
"Give me a clue," Jisoo tried to figure out what Jennie would do to her if she refused to see her. When the friends fought, they'd get into petty feuds with each other. But it never went too far. They'd end up laughing about it together. It was their safe way of letting off steam and anger at each other. They loved each other too much and never really harmed each other, though they had many different disagreements and quarrels over the years. Even the siblings fight at times.
