My mouth dried up as the realisation hit me. The lack of moisture made me choke. "How could you?" I cried. Tears rolled down my cheeks.

Jason leaned closer to me, "I thought you knew!"

Then I realised... it's not the first time. The room started spinning. My boyfriend is a thief. Thief. Thief. The word kept relaying in my head. A huge wave of nausea swept over me as I stumbled over to my desk. I leant over the desk and put my head in my hands. How could he?

"Is everything ok back there?" The teacher stuttered.

"NO!" I yelled, grabbing my back and pushing my way through the desks and out of the door, oblivious to the teacher yelling after me. I heard the door slam behind me then open a few seconds later.

Jason's arm coiled round my shoulder, stopping me from going any further. "I'm sorry, I-"

I tugged my arm away from him. "Don't bother. I don't want to see you again... ever."

I shoved him backwards and ran into the bathrooms. I fell to the floor and shielded my eyes with my sleeves. Tears flooded from my eyes. Thief. Thief. Thief. I knew he was trouble but I didn't think he was stupid.

The door was pushed open slowly. I stood up and marched towards a cubicle to avoid embarrassing myself in front of whoever had just come in. I locked the door behind me. The figure cleared their throat. I heard the cubicle next to me open and the lid slammed. A rustling sound was followed by a pair of hands reaching over the cubicle.

Jason's face peered over the top. "I'm sorry; I swear I wouldn't have given it to you if I thought you didn't know."

His apologetic tone almost had me fooled.

"Look Jason, I know you have a reputation or whatever but so do I and I don't want to be around someone who steals things just to impress their mates. It's not cool and if I'd have kept this..." I tugged the chain from my neck and brandished it in his face. "Then I could have been in big trouble as well. You didn't even think about that did you?"

"I only did it to impress you.... I just wanted you to know how much I liked you. I'm sorry." The words gushed out of his mouth as looked at the floor.

"Why couldn't you have just told me?" I yelled. "You don't need to steal things to make me understand you like me. I don't want your fancy gifts and presents and stuff ok. I don't want a boyfriend who steals stuff for me. It makes me look bad, ok. Not just you, you didn't even think about me did you?"

"I know, it was stupid. I haven't done it before; I just panicked and grabbed it. I won't do it ever, ever again."

"I can't trust you Jason."

He hoisted his leg up onto the top of the cubicle and pulled his body up. Then he swung his legs over and lowered himself down next to me. I turned away and tried to open the door. He put his hand on mine and pulled it to his chest.

"You can trust me Olivia, I promise."

I looked into his eyes. He looked sincere. "How do I know I can trust you?"

"You're just going to have to listen to your heart... not your head.”

I groaned at his cliché attempt to get me to forgive him. His eyes were boring into me; I could feel them. I didn’t dare turn to face him. I was in a state of complete shock.

“Jason, things are different for you. You have an amazing house, a perfect family and you’re popular. Me.... I’m the complete opposite of that. I can’t be seen with someone like you; my family already have enough trouble as it is.”

“I know, I get that. It was a mistake ok. If you say you don’t want me to do it again, I swear on my life I won’t.”

I took a deep breath. I had no idea if he was telling the truth. He couldn’t be trusted and I knew that but he was showing me attention – he actually liked me. That had never happened to me before... I liked the feeling.

“Ok. I don’t want you to do it again.”
